NOACA to Conduct Regional Travel Survey

NOACA and the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) are conducting a Regional Travel Survey to get a better understanding of northeast Ohio's current and future transportation needs, and gather data about how people travel in this area.

Planner Marc Von Allmen was one of several NOACA staffers testing GPS devices for the Regional Travel Survey.

Between now and December 2012, travel data will be collected from randomly selected households in northeast Ohio. Participants will use a Global Positioning System (GPS) device or maintain a travel diary to record the details of their daily travel. The information gathered will help planners develop transportation projects that serve the region's needs. Should your household be contacted to participate in this important study, please consider taking part.

NOACA Completes Traffic Studies for City of North Olmsted

At the request of the city of North Olmsted, NOACA conducted two intersection studies as part of the Links component of its Transportation for Livable Communities Initiative (TLCI). Staff examined traffic volumes, traffic conditions and crash statistics at the Lorain Road and Brookpark Road intersection, and the Lorain Road/Porter Road/Butternut Ridge Road intersection.

Recommendations range from changing traffic signal timing to considering major configuration changes such as traffic roundabouts. Communities in the NOACA five-county region are welcome to apply for traffic studies or staff technical assistance through the TLCI.

TLCI Studies Recommend Improvements in Local Neighborhoods

Two recipients of NOACA TLCI planning grants have completed studies recently posted on NOACA's website. The East 22nd Street Corridor/Campus District Transportation and Redevelopment Plan proposes transportation improvements in the area between the Cleveland State University and Tri-C Metro campuses that encourage bicycling and walkability, improve land use, and stimulate economic development.

The city of Lakewood's Birdtown Madison Study birdtowncoverproposes transportation improvements that preserve and enhance the assets of the ethnic Birdtown neighborhood. This neighborhood was established when employees of the National Carbon Company settled there in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Several of the development's streets were named after birds, including Robin, Lark, Quail and Plover. The study includes recommendations for bike facilities, streetscape amenities, public art and bird identity graphics that can be incorporated into location and way finding signage.

Voice Your Opinion on Proposed Transportation Improvements

NOACA welcomes public review and comment on all of its federally funded programs and projects. For the next month, descriptions of 20 proposed road and bridge projects from Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake and Medina Counties will be available on the website for review and comment. At their March 2012 meeting, the NOACA Governing Board will consider adding these projects to the region's long-range transportation plan.

The Northeast Ohio Sustainable Communities Consortium's (NEOSCC) Vibrant Northeast Ohio initiative is focused on advancing a quality, connected twelve-county region amidst today's economic climate and stretched resources. The aim of all of these efforts is to create a vibrant and resilient northeast Ohio that increases our quality of life, connects our communities, welcomes diversity, restores and protects our natural resources and creates a competitive economic framework for the vitality of our region.

The NEOSCC is a three-year planning program funded largely by a $4.25 million federal grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) as part of the new federal Sustainable Communities Initiative. The Sustainable Communities Initiative is an interagency collaboration among HUD, the U.S. Department of Transportation, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. NOACA is providing leadership through the organization's Executive Committee and serves as the consortium's fiscal agent. Subscribe to their newsletter for program updates and opportunities for engagement.

The Northeast Ohio Areawide Coordinating Agency (NOACA) is a regional organization of local officials responsible for carrying out transportation and environmental planning under the local direction and in accordance with state and federal mandates.
