Tips for your children in college

College can be a great time for young people to learn healthy financial habits. Unfortunately, they are at a higher risk for identity theft. Parents should guide their college students to take precautions to protect their identity and financial future. Here are a few tips to pass along to your college students:

  • Have sensitive mail sent to parent's home address.
  • Never loan a credit card or debit card to anyone.
  • Review your credit report three times a year for free at annualcreditreport.com.
  • Remove your name from mailing lists for pre-approved credit card offers at optoutprescreen.com.
  • Keep important documents such as passports, birth certificates, and financial account statements in a fire proof safe.
  • Set up email or text message account transaction alerts for credit cards and debit cards.
  • Make online passwords long and use a mix of letters, numbers and characters.
  • Install antivirus and spyware software on your personal computer and require a password to access your computer and Smartphone.
