People are at a particularly high risk for identity theft during tax season. Many documents containing personal information such as Social Security numbers, account numbers and employment information are processed through the mail and email daily.
Here are a few tips to protect your identity:
- Utilize our LeapFile Secure File Exchange service when sending personal information via email to our office. To access this service visit our homepage and you will see a link at the top of the page. Files exchanged in this manner are encrypted and secure.
- Hand deliver your tax documents to our office or, if you are unable to hand deliver personal documents, take them to your nearest Post Office, deliver the envelope to an employee inside and have the documents sent by certified mail.
- Store all sensitive documents in a secure fireproof safe.
- Never respond by email to an inquiry which appears to be from the IRS and which requests personal information. If you have a doubt, call the local office of the IRS.
