Results Are In!
Last month, we asked 700 individuals to participate our quick poll about natural hazard threats in the Purchase Region.   
 
We were overwhelmed with the responses.  Thanks to all who participated! The Jackson Purchase Hazard
Mitigation Committe will use these results as they update the five-year plan.

White House Rural Council Holds Listening Session at Purchase ADD

In June, President Barack Obama establised the White House Rural Council.  Delta Regional Authority Chairman Chris Masingill was appointed to serve on the Council.  In August, he and State USDA Director Tom Fern hosted an informal listening Session at the PADD.  Local leaders had a chance to discuss a variety of rural issues including job creation and infrastructure needs.

CEDS Draft Report Availble for Review
The draft of this year's Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS) report is now available for review. The CEDS is an annual document that provides
in-depth examination of the region's current economic climate as well as a forecast for future growth.

PADD Forms New Committee to Update the Regional Hazard Mitigation Plan

 

The PADD has formed an ad hoc committee to review and update the Purchase Region Hazard Mitigation Plan.  Over the course of the next several months the committee, along with county level mitigation planning teams, will be revising and updating the plan.  Carlisle County Judge Executive Greg Terry will chair the committee.

The Kentucky Workforce Investment Board (KWIB) has implemented a new program which will certify counties based on the quality of their labor force.  Work Ready Communities is designed to transform local economies and give counties a competitive advantage in attracting new businesses and jobs.

Farms to Food Banks Provides Kentucky Grown Fresh Produce to Hungry Families
The Kentucky Association of Food Banks has lauched a new program designed to assist low-income families have greater access to fresh produce.  With funds from the Kentucky Agricultural Development Fund, they are purchasing surplus produce grown by Kentucky farmers, then distributing the produce free-of-charge to food banks, including those served by the PADD Commodity and Food Bank Task Force.
Number of Homeless Individuals in the Purchase Region Nearly Doubles in Three Years

The Kentucky Housing Corporation has announced that 276 homeless individuals were counted, in Purchase Region, during the statewide Point-In-Time Homeless Count held on January 27, 2011. This number represents nearly 10% of the total number of homeless individuals in the Commonwealth during the 2011 Count. In the past three years, the number of homeless in the Purchase has increased, from 142 in 2008.

Purchase Housing Corporation Receives $300,000 Rural Innovation Grant from HUD

Purchase Area Housing Corporation has been awarded a Rural Innovation Fund grant in the amount of $300,000 to repair and construct affordable homes in Fulton County, Hickman County and the cities of Mayfield and Murray. The project will rehabilitate nine substandard, dilapidated homes that will house low-income families and will train Area Technology Center students as part of this effort.
