Most of our summer birds should now be on their way to warmer wintering territories. There may be a few stragglers. The molt will finish up and our permanent avian dwellers will return to the bird feeders. The nights will begin to cool down, days become noticeably shorter. Blackbirds are becoming restless. Birds have always been the true harbingers of changing seasons. Our earliest ancestors and Native Tribes relied on watching the birds to time the change in seasons

Become A Citizen Scientist

It's for the birds!

 

The Value of Participating in Annual Bird Counts as a Citizen Scientist

 

 In 2001, Cornell University's Lab of Ornithology identified that the Chickadee population had reached a twelve year record high. This information was gathered from the data provided by bird enthusiasts who participated as citizen scientists in several national bird counts such as the Great Backyard Bird Count, Audubon's Annual Christmas Bird Count and Project Feeder Watch.  Due to the high numbers of Chickadees by 2004 there population crashed

Prairie Festival / Spring Creek Prairie

 

 Sunday, October 9, 1:00-5:00 p.m.
 
This year's prairie festival will be a change of pace from our Twilight on the Tallgrass celebrations from past years.We are partnering with the Nebraska Folklife Network (NFN) and will host the 5th annual "Harvest of Traditions" to create one big afternoon of fun and exploration for the whole family.A Prairie Discovery Trail will be open 1:30 to 4:30 for visitors to interact with biologists, educators, artists, writers, and others who gain expertise and inspiration from the prairie. Visitors will be able to study insect diversity, discover the rich plant community, see live specimens of Nebraska's reptiles and amphibians, and lots more.
