It's Hummingbird Season in the Great Plains

Although hummingbirds nest throughout North America in woody areas whereASP Hummingbird Fdr there is an ample supply of water including along Nebraska's Missouri River Valley, they are traditionally migratory across the Great Plains. The Ruby-throated Hummingbird, the primary hummingbird species of the Eastern U.S., passes through the plains states in early May on the way to their nesting grounds to the north. By August they return making them one of the earliest migratory birds in route to their tropical wintering grounds. Learn how easy it is to attract these little jewels to your backyard whether your in an area where they nest or if you are in the path of their annual migration by clicking on Attracting Hummingbirds

Bird Feeder of the Month - Platform FeederJay W/P On Platform

Blue Jays are members of the corvidae family of birds. Others include Crows, Magpies, and Ravens. They are a very intelligent group and worthy of us giving them much credit. Attracting Blue Jays is entertaining to say the least. But they also provide the early warning calls to other birds in the area when a predator appears, be it a hawk or a cat. I use an open Platform Bird Feeder on a pole protected with an Erva Pole Mounted Squirrel Guard. On this particular feeder I place Peanuts in the Shell. Not only does it attract Blue Jays displaying all their antics, but Red-bellied Woodpeckers and Cardinals as well. Lately I have been scattering a handfull of Shelled Peanuts on it along with the peanuts in the shell and to my surprise we now have a Brown Thrasher enjoying those. Give it a try. It has become one of the most exciting feeders in our backyard. Learn more at

Outwitting Squirrels & BlackbirdsDun Caged Feeder

I have been in the bird feeding industry for 18 years operating a wild bird specialty store. Two of the most common complaints I hear from customers who enjoy feeding birds is that squirrels are raiding the feeder, consuming mass quantities of bird seed, and at times, destroying the feeder beyond repair... read more
