Are You Ready for Some Football on WSCA!?
| |
Portsmouth Community Radio and Portsmouth High School have teamed up to broadcast all league home games for the Clippers football team this fall. The broadcasts will begin September 28, with Andrew Van Ness doing the play-by-play and Rodney Colvert doing the color commentary. The rest of the production team includes Michael Peters, Richard Kirkpatrick, and Charlie Griffin doing the pre-game, post-game, and halftime shows.
The team has been working for nearly a year to put this program together. With the help of the high school and Portsmouth Community Radio engineers Dave Day and Steve Diamond, the station will be able to broadcast the games via live remote on Friday nights.
Be sure to tune in Friday, September 28, at 6:45 p.m. for the pre-game show, with kickoff at 7 p.m. . . . and go Clippers!

Radiogazette Recaps Local Debates
| |
On Friday, September 21, Radiogazette (Fridays, 9-10 a.m.) rebroadcast portions of the September 17 debate between First Congressional District candidates Frank Guinta and Carol Shea-Porter. Host Ann Haggart played several excerpts from the debate, held at St. Anselm College's New Hampshire Institute of Politics. Haggart also shared what Guinta and Shea-Porter had to say in one-minute clips directly to the voters of the Seacoast.
"I like to give the mic over and let a candidate say what they want to say with no pretext," Haggart said. "It's always quite interesting what they elect to say."
Tune in to Radiogazette on Friday, September 28, for a glimpse at the race for New Hampshire Governor between Democrat Maggie Hassan and Republican Ovide Lamontagne. Haggart will share clips of the gubernatorial debate that was held September 19 at St. Anselm College.
Pictured from left to right are gubernatorial candidates Maggie Hassan (D) and Ovide Lamontagne (R) and First Congressional District Candidates Frank Guinta (R) and Carol Shea-Porter (D).

2012 Homelessness Marathon Set for October 21
| |
Volunteers John Lovering, Rick Dirck, Rocky Smith, and Deirdre Hebert are hard at work putting together this year's Homelessness Marathon, which airs on Portsmouth Community Radio October 21 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The Homelessness Marathon's mission "is to raise consciousness about homelessness and poverty in America and around the world." There is no on-air fundraising during the marathon -- we aren't soliciting funds to feed the hungry or to shelter the homeless. Instead, this broadcast exists, in the words of Jeremy Anderson (AKA nobody), for "giving people the reasons for what they already know in their hearts."
This event is the 15th annual Homelessness Marathon, and it marks the seventh year of participation from Portsmouth Community Radio. This year's broadcast is different in a number of ways. First, it is in October rather than February, and it's during the daytime rather than overnight. We are expecting a substantially larger listening audience.
Another departure from the broadcasts of the past is that Portsmouth Community Radio will be hosting one hour of the national broadcast. Not only will we be broadcasting to the Portsmouth area, but our programming will be carried by nearly 200 radio, satellite, and television stations around the nation. While we've used our Codec to broadcast live from remote events before, this marks the first time that programming on Portsmouth Community Radio has been carried by other stations.
Portsmouth Community Radio is scheduled to be the originating station during the 3-4 p.m. time slot. Our focus is "misconceptions about homelessness." This program demonstrates what community radio is all about. Homelessness is a topic that evokes deep feelings in all of us. But a small group has decided that this is an issue that is important enough to broadcast, and with the support of the station, this issue is given a voice, a platform. Only community radio is capable of being that flexible, each and every year. It's not only the team that is producing the programming that makes this happen -- it's the entire station and everyone who supports it that make this broadcast possible.
Be sure to tune in on October 21 for the broadcast -- and especially at 3 p.m., when Portsmouth Community Radio will be broadcasting nationwide.

Portsmouth Community Radio Programming Notes

Audio Theatre Begins Ninth Year on September 25
 | | John Lovering |
Time flies when you are having fun, and that statement has never been more true than when it comes to Audio Theatre (Tuesdays, 6-8 p.m.) host John Lovering starting his ninth year on the air September 25.
Over the past eight years and 416 broadcasts, John has missed only three live shows. It seems that two blizzards and a hospital stay interfered with his ability to make it to the studio. But over the course of 413 live broadcasts, listeners have had the opportunity to hear more than 1,700 different radio programs. In addition, the Audio Theatre Players have performed nearly 60 shows, reenacting some of the best radio shows of the past.
"I have thoroughly enjoyed every minute of my time behind the microphone, and I consider the opportunity to be here a privilege," said John. "In addition, I thank all the people who contribute to Portsmouth Community Radio, for without their financial support, none of this would have been possible. That goes for the many volunteers who work behind the scenes, as well."
We hope listeners have enjoyed hearing the many samples of radio history that have been shared during Audio Theatre, and with a bit of luck and good health, there will be more old-time radio coming your way from the more than 3,000 programs in John's collection.
In celebration of starting a new year on September 25, all the shows heard that night will be "new" shows, being aired for the first time on Portsmouth Community Radio. They will include "Dangerous Assignment," a 1947 Cold War spy adventure series; "Dr. Christian," from 1938, the first medical soap opera heard on radio; and "The Black Museum," starring Orson Welles, a 1952 syndicated show about an actual British museum that houses weapons used in the committal of crimes.

Don't Dis My Ability (alternate Tuesdays, 3:30-4:30 p.m.) has a new co-host. Lee Harvey, formerly an architect working in Portsmouth before a devastating stroke years ago, has taken the place of John Eubanks, who has decided to leave the show.
Welcome to the Portsmouth Community Radio family, Lee!
