AUGUST 2012

Dear Friends,

The articles in this issue of Portsmouth Community Radio's Tidings demonstrate just a few of the many ways in which the station serves Portsmouth and the broader Seacoast community. These include interviewing political candidates so residents can make informed decisions come election time, and broadcasting local high-school sporting events live on the radio. Read on for more information.

And, of course, we still play lots of music, with shows such as Under the Radar: "Big Band Mondays" and the brand-new show The Navigator Mix.

As always, thanks for listening!

Portsmouth Community Radio Gives Voice to Candidates

With only a few short weeks left before the state primary election, Portsmouth Community Radio is making it easier for listeners to get to know the candidates.

With Governor John Lynch stepping aside after eight years in the statehouse, the spot as the state of New Hampshire's CEO is up for grabs. On Portsmouth Community Radio, former state senator Burt Cohen of New Castle interviewed all three contenders for the Democratic primary: former Senate Majority Leader Maggie Hassan of Exeter, former state senator Jackie Cilley of Barrington, and veteran Bill Kennedy of Danbury. Audio archives from the interviews on The Burt Cohen Show (Tuesdays and Thursdays, 12-1 p.m.) can be found here.

On Radiogazette (Fridays, 9-10 a.m.), attorney and former Portsmouth City Councilor Charlie Griffin talked to Ovide Lamontagne of Manchester and Kevin Smith of Litchfield, both candidates running in the Republican primary. Audio archives of the interviews can be found here. An interview with candidate Robert Tarr of Manchester airs Friday, August 24.

Station to Broadcast Live Portsmouth High School Football

Volunteer Michael Peters, Trustee Charlie Griffin, and Director of News and Public Affairs Ann Haggart have been working for over a year to enable Portsmouth Community Radio to broadcast Portsmouth High School football games live this fall.

The first step was assuring proper training and back-up personnel for remote broadcasting. Second was partnering with Portsmouth Superintendent of Schools Ed McDonough and Athletic Director Russ Wilson. Third was pulling together a team of experienced sports broadcasters. Fourth was creating a broadcast booth at the PHS football field. And fifth was purchasing and setting up special radio signal equipment for the remote, as Wi-Fi and Ethernet connections are not available out at the field.

Our crack sports team consists of Andrew Van Ness with the play-by-play
color commentator Rodney Colvert, and on-site producer and engineer Michael Peters. Charlie Griffin is handling the remote duties back at the station, plus hosting pre-game and half-time shows.

Other station volunteers helping out during the process include Director of Programming Damon Thomas, Dave Day, Steve Diamond, and Michael Bliss. PHS support comes from Ken Linchey, Tom Kozikowski, and Tom Lutz. In addition, the school is funding the special radio signal equipment needed for our remote equipment to connect back to the station for broadcast.

We are looking for underwriters to sponsor each quarter, the pre-game show, and the half-time show. If you or someone you know is interested, contact underwriting@wscafm.org

"Big Band Mondays" Airs a Tribute to Ina Ray Hutton

Steve Shervanian

"Big Band Mondays" with Steve Shervanian, airing on Under the Radar from 8 to 10 p.m. the first Monday of each month on Portsmouth Community Radio, presents a special request show on September 3.

Previously on the big band show we heard the women who formed the basis for the big band swing era. One name and sound jumped out to the listeners . . . the one and only Ms. Ina Ray Hutton.

Sit back and listen to Ina Ray Hutton and her Melodears play their brand of strictly female big band swing music. Then you'll move on to hear Ina Ray's 1940-1944 orchestra do their male/female version of big band swing. To conclude this retrospective of the great Ina Ray Hutton sound, we'll play some live radio broadcasts of Hutton recorded in 1943-1944.

So sit back and relax as Ina Ray Hutton leads one of most popular all-girl bands of the swing era, and you'll know why "Big Band Mondays" is the ultimate source for big band music on the Seacoast.
