Loyal Listener from Kittery Wins Grand Prize Drawing
| |
Tracy Johnson of Kittery was pleasantly surprised to learn that she was the winner of Portsmouth Community Radio's June Pledge Drive Grand Prize drawing -- a full summer CSA share from Heron Pond Farm!
After a busy spring, Tracy realized that she had forgotten to sign up for a CSA share this year. So, winning was good luck all around.
Andre Cantelmo, co-owner of Heron Pond Farm, presented Tracy with her summer share certificate at the Portsmouth Farmer's Market. Tracy will enjoy a weekly variety of fruits and vegetables from now through early October. Heron Pond Farm donated the summer share for Portsmouth Community Radio's June Pledge Drive.

Tracy Johnson of Kittery happily accepts Andre Cantelmo's welcome to Heron Pond Farm's Summer CSA.

Changes Afoot on Under the Radar
| |
All good things come to an end, but with every end comes a new beginning. Sad news from Under the Radar (Mondays, 8-10 p.m.), as LJ Delta is leaving his seat in the hosting rotation to concentrate on his band, LJ Delta and the Lonesome Wolves.
 | | Jenny Freeman |
The seat will not stay vacant very long, however, as Jenny Freeman will return to the airwaves in LJ's spot. Jenny will augment the Under the Radar scene with the sounds of soul, funk, and R&B. Her first show will air July 30. The new hosting rotation for Under the Radar will include big band music with Steve Shervanian on the first Monday of the month, with Jean Gagne and Jenny Freeman rotating the remaining Mondays.
And don't forget, you can still catch LJ Delta on The High Lonesome Sound (Sundays, 3-5 p.m.), as he spins the best of outlaw and traditional country music.

John "Supersport" Scavo, host of Scratchy 45s & Beyond (Saturdays, 9 a.m.-12 p.m.) looks through some of the vinyl compilation albums from K-Tel, Ronco, and other labels that he played on his special June 16 Pledge Drive show. |
Under the Radar Host Attends Antiques Road Show
| |
Ever stood in line with a few hundred people cradling, clutching, and dragging everything from old clocks, to paintings, to a full size male mermaid, to antique guns and a full set of armor? Well, Under the Radar (Mondays, 8-10 p.m.) DJ Steve Shervanian did! Steve attended Antiques Road Show's first show of its 17th season on Saturday, June 9, at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center.

A Frank Zappa poster from Steve Shervanian's collection
|
Steve brought with him numerous posters announcing rock concerts in the Boston area dating from approximately 1965. The bulk of the posters were from The Boston Tea Party, a rock 'n' roll venue that first opened at 53 Berkley Street in Boston, then moved to 15 Lansdowne Street. The posters featured acts such as Frank Zappa, Eric Clapton, The Kinks, Van Morrison, Ten Years After, Traffic, and others.
After a wait of several hours, Steve and his wife, Donna, were directed to the table of Nicholas "Nicko" Lowery, the president, principle auctioneer, and director of the poster department of Swann Auction Galleries. Lowery gushed while reviewing the posters and noted that they were a fine representation of underappreciated East Coast 60s rock posters. He took pictures of a few of the posters so he could do further research on some of the artists, such as Drew/Engstrom and Mann.
Lowery suggested that the collection be cataloged and stored to wait for the market to rise a bit more. He also briefed Steve and Donna on storage techniques to preserve the posters. Lowery asked Steve whether he had attended all of the concerts, and Steve answered in the affirmative. Lowery then challenged Steve to put a book together with the posters and a story for each one. Steve's retort was, "Hey! It was the 60s, I don't remember too much about it!"
In the end, the posters brought to the Antiques Roads Show were appraised at $5,000. After assisting her husband up off the floor, Donna escorted Steve to their car where the trip back to Eliot was one of much merriment and laughter!
