Annual Spring Pledge Drive to Be Held in June
| |
Once again, Portsmouth Community Radio is gearing up for its annual spring Pledge Drive. The drive will begin on Friday morning, June 15, and runs through Thursday, June 21. The station's Pledge Committee is busy organizing duties to ensure that the station runs an efficient, effective, and entertaining drive.
Pledge drives are the single best way for non-commercial broadcasters to generate member and new-member support, and membership dollars provide the largest percentage of revenue to stations of all sizes. The Pledge Committee reminds all volunteers of the importance of these pledge drives from both a promotional and revenue standpoint. As a radio station, we have a unique opportunity to tell our friends about all of the services we provide and why it's so important for them to make a contribution to this effort.
According to Board Chair Ann Bliss, "Treating the Pledge Drive with the same kind of importance and preparation we put into our programs is an important service that we can provide to the station."
In addition to the on-air activities related to the Pledge Drive, Portsmouth Community Radio will send out some 1,000 mail pieces to current and past donors and will run advertising in local print media. Another goal of this season's Pledge Drive is to provide a daily report, including the running tally and the names of special guests who will participate in our shows during the week.
"As a listener," said Bliss, "you can make your pledge and support your favorite show by calling in while that show is on. Our number is 603-430-9722 (that's 430-WSCA). Or, you can make your pledge online. Click here to go to our website, and follow the prompts . . . Thanks in advance!"

Coast Picks Up Listeners for Portsmouth Community Radio
| |
In a "visibility-for-visibility" trade, posters promoting Portsmouth Community Radio will soon be riding buses operated by Coast Transportation, in return for a schedule of on-air underwriting announcements.
"The posters do more than boast about our community-focused programming, though," says outgoing Communications Director Terry MacDonald, "they give bus riders with smartphones a way to connect with Portsmouth Community Radio right then and there!"
Each poster includes a "QR code." Anyone with a smartphone that has a QR Reader (available as a free download) can hold that smartphone up to the code on the poster and be transported to the station's website. With a couple more clicks, that bus rider can then be listening live.

Pagan FM Approaches Its 200th Podcast
Have you ever wondered what Witches, Druids, and Shamans believe? Have you heard the word "Pagan," but wondered what it was all about? Have you ever felt a kinship with nature, a religious reverence for wild places that somehow felt "sacred"? Well, all of that, and more, is discussed each and every week on Pagan FM (Thursdays 10 p.m.-midnight).
Now in its fifth year on the air, Pagan FM is one of the oldest continuously airing Pagan-themed radio programs in the United States. And being streamed live from Portsmouth Community Radio's website, and airing also as a podcast, the program is heard literally around the world. Coming up in July, Pagan FM will be airing a very special episode, marking the 200th episode to be podcast. Downloaded some 5,000 times per week, the podcast version of Pagan FM has entertained and informed infantry in Iraq, musicians in Maine, Pagans in Poland, Druids in Dublin, and Witches in Washington. We're trying to figure out exactly how to celebrate, but it's sure to be entertaining! So, if all you know about witches is that they melt (or that houses fall on them), if you'd like to hear all sorts of music that you've never heard before, and if you want to hear interviews with leaders in the Pagan community, tune in every Thursday night from 10 p.m. to midnight for Pagan FM! |
Under the Radar: Big Band Monday Airs June 4
Tune in to Portsmouth Community Radio on Monday, June 4, from 8 to 10 p.m., for the Seacoast's only big band show, Under the Radar: Big Band Monday, with host Steve Shervanian.
Do the songs "I've Got You Under My Skin," "Night and Day," and even "Don't Fence Me In" sound familiar? They were all written by the featured artist on the June 4 program, the great songwriter Cole Porter. You'll hear versions of Porter classics sung by Ella Fitzgerald, as well as big band versions not normally heard on the airwaves, as Steve celebrates Mr. Porter's birthday.
If you like big bands and swing music, then tune in to Under the Radar: Big Band Monday the first Monday of each month, from 8 to 10 p.m. on Portsmouth Community Radio. If you have any requests for the show, e-mail Steve at wscautr@yahoo.com.
