MARCH 2012
Dear Friends,
Hopefully we're not speaking too soon, but it certainly looks like spring has sprung here in the Seacoast!
With the warmer weather comes outdoor events and activities: farmers' markets, concerts at Prescott Park, and plain old people watching on Market Square. These types of community activities are just begging to be broadcast live on Portsmouth Community Radio, and we now have the capacity to do so.
Read on for information on our new remote broadcasting teams, details about a very special and important broadcast that we'll be airing just days from now, and news about some of Portsmouth Community Radio's other plans for this spring. |

Governor's State of the State Address to Be Broadcast Live
| |
When Governor John Lynch delivers his State of the State address to members and guests of the Greater Portsmouth Chamber of Commerce at 8:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 21, Portsmouth Community Radio will be on hand to broadcast the address live. The governor's speech will be the centerpiece of the morning's Bank of America Breakfast Forum at the ballroom of the Sheraton-Harborside Hotel in Portsmouth.

Governor John Lynch
| This being Governor Lynch's fourth and final term in office, Wednesday's State of the State address will be his last. The governor will speak on the state of the economy and what he sees coming out of the New Hampshire Legislature in 2012 and beyond. There is anticipation, too, that he will share some history and reflection on his eight years as governor.
Hosting the broadcast for us will be Dave Day, with Richard Kirkpatrick the engineer of record. Both are new Portsmouth Community Radio volunteers.
In addition to the live broadcast from the Breakfast Forum, the governor's address will be rebroadcast on Portsmouth Community Radio on Saturday, March 23 at 1 p.m.

New Remote Broadcasting Teams Formed
|
 | |
Dave Day addresses a group of volunteers.
|
New volunteers Debbi Benedict, Maureen Billet, Owen Hayes, Richard Kirkpatrick, Ross Laorenza, and Don Malcolm joined Charlie Griffin, Michael Peters, and Steve Diamond on March 17 to learn about potential remote broadcasting opportunities for the station. Long-time volunteer Gordon Sharpless is also involved in the project.
Another new volunteer, Dave Day, is offering training on the "Sporty" remote on Thursday, March 29 from 4 to 6 p.m. for one group and on Saturday, March 31 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. for the second group.
During 2011, Portsmouth Community Radio used remotes for the first time at the farmers' market and for the Live from Market Square program. It became evident that the community wanted more remote shows, so the call went out for those interested in learning the equipment and teaming with other volunteers to make it happen.
At 8 a.m. on Wednesday, March 21, Dave Day and Richard Kirkpatrick will be the first team to head out into the community, as Portsmouth Community Radio broadcasts Governor John Lynch's State of the State address live from the Portsmouth Sheraton-Harborside Hotel. Terry MacDonald and Steve Diamond will handle duties back at the station during the broadcast. Bank of America is sponsoring WSCA's broadcast of the event.

Station to Receive Long-Overdue Facelift
| |
Volunteers Jean Gagne, Tim Stone, Ann Bliss, Michael Bliss, and Ann Haggart welcomed Eric Pearce and Tom Boisvert to WSCA earlier this month to map out a plan to revitalize the station's interior. After a thorough review of our needs, a plan was drawn for replacing ceiling tiles, upgrading the electric and bathroom, fixing the heat/air vents as needed, sound-proofing Control Room B, painting, and installing new flooring. The upgrades will all occur over the next few months.
And not to be outdone, new volunteer Susan Ferber, a landscape designer, joined Ann Bliss and Ann Haggart in a review of the station's
entryway. Susan is drawing up a landscape plan that will be implemented this Spring. These upgrades are the result of donated materials, labor, and underwriting in-kind support. Thank you to everyone who has volunteered to help!

WSCA Goes Behind the Scenes for Restaurant Week
| |
One of the most popular events throughout Portsmouth and the Seacoast is the bi-annual Restaurant Week, which is organized by the Greater Portsmouth Chamber of Commerce. This time around, Portsmouth Community Radio will add another layer of interest to the event with a special two-program series titled Seacoast À La Carte, hosted by Susan Tuveson and airing on two successive Mondays, March 19 and 26, from 6 to 7 p.m.
Restaurant Week runs from March 22 to March 31. Participating restaurants come up with special dishes and three-course prix fixe menus for the event, which they offer at the special price of $16.95 per person for lunch and $29.95 per person for dinner (not including beverages, taxes, or gratuity).
 | |
Susan Tuveson
|
On Seacoast À La Carte, Susan Tuveson will go into dining rooms and kitchens to talk with participating restaurant owners and chefs about their special Restaurant Week offerings.
No stranger to the culinary world, Susan is the former co-host of Portsmouth Community Radio's Wine Me, Dine Me. She is also the former chef/owner of Cacao Chocolates in Kittery, a food writer, and a cooking instructor.
In addition to being broadcast from 106.1 FM, Seacoast À La Carte can be heard online on our website, and each program will be available in the radio station's archives for two weeks.

Meet the Trustees: Charlie Griffin
| |
In each issue of Tidings, we introduce a different member of our Board of Trustees. As you'll see, Portsmouth Community Radio's Trustees bring to the Board very different career backgrounds and life experiences, collectively representing a valuable resource to our radio station and its members. One thing they all seem to have in common, though, is a commitment to volunteerism and long histories of service to non-profit organizations.

Charlie Griffin
|
Charlie Griffin was born and raised in Portsmouth and remembers the "golden days" of radio. As a toddler he was fascinated by radio; upon meeting a local announcer, Charlie asked him how he got out of the radio. His early love of radio has stayed with him throughout his life, and he is pleased to be able to have fulfilled his lifelong dream of being on the radio.
Charlie is married, the father of three, and the grandfather of two. He has served in the military, practiced law, taught, served on the City Council, and chaired the School Board, and he currently serves on the board of the Seacoast Martin Luther King, Jr. Coalition, and is a Trustee of Piscataqua Savings Bank.
Charlie enjoys swimming, following politics, doing crossword puzzles, and suffering with the Red Sox.

Audio Theatre Re-creates "The Case of the Goofy Groom"

On Tuesday, April 10, the Portsmouth Community Radio Audio Theatre Players will perform "The Case of the Goofy Groom" from The Adventures of the Thin Man radio series. The show was originally broadcast on March 10, 1946.
The series, created by Dashiell Hammett, began on NBC radio in 1941 and featured the husband and wife detective team of Nick and Nora Charles. The series ran on various networks until 1950. Many of the Thin Man stories were also made into popular films between 1937 and 1947.
What made the series unique was that the two lead characters managed to get themselves involved in some pretty heavy criminal cases, yet maintained a sense of humor throughout the investigative process. Les Damon and Claudia Morgan are the best remembered stars who played Nick and Nora on radio.
You can hear our local cast of actors re-create one of these excellent original mystery-comedy shows, "The Case of the Goofy Groom," on Portsmouth Community Radio's Audio Theatre, Tuesday, April 10 from 6 to 8 p.m.
Our cast includes Diane Ficarra, Jean Proulx, Eddie McGee, Dan Comly, Kim Sedlock, Mike Nelson, and Paul Bellefeuille. The program is directed, recorded, and edited by Audio Theatre host John Lovering.

John Riley (L) and Kyle Taylor (R) make quick work of getting Portsmouth Community Radio's posters up around town. Whether it's for the Jumbo Circus Peanuts Mardi Gras fundraiser or our call for news reporters, we can always count on their offers to help. Thanks, John and Kyle!

Kristen Lamb, Director of Education and Outreach at The Center for Wildlife in Cape Neddick, Maine, and her "friend" Ruby were guests on Jean Proulx's PAWsitive Thoughts (Thursdays, 2-3 p.m.) on January 26. |
