Dear Friends,

With the new year comes a new look for Tidings. This is just the first step in the roll out of a new, more contemporary design scheme for Portsmouth Community Radio that you'll see in 2012. We hope you'll agree that it's an improvement.

In this issue, you'll find info about our annual Winter Dance fundraiser, learn about the roll of the station's Board of Trustees, and meet the newest member of the Board.

Stay warm and dry, everyone; spring is just a couple of months away!

WSCA to Hold Winter Dance on Saturday, January 28

The Jeannie Daniels Band
What better way to heat things up in the dead of winter than a fundraiser dance with Portsmouth Community Radio and the Jeannie Daniels Band? Join your friends and neighbors for a rockin' community dance Saturday, January 28, at The Hall, 238 Deer Street, Portsmouth.

Back by popular demand, the Jeannie Daniels Band will perform infectious dance music that includes rock, R&B, motown, soul, funk, and a dash of swing. Opening the night will be Wooden Eye, known for their seamless blend of blues, rock 'n' roll, folk, and country. The band features local musicians Bob Halperin, Mike "Bullfrog" Rogers, Dan MacLellan, and Joe Rogers.

The Hall features a comfortable atmosphere with a large dance floor, lots of room to sit back and relax with friends, reasonable beverage prices, and free on-site parking. Tickets for this fundraiser dance will be available at the door for $10, and admission is free if you join as a new Portsmouth Community Radio member. Doors open at 7:30 p.m., with music beginning at 7:45 p.m. and continuing until midnight. This is a 21-plus event.

Volunteers of the Month: Jean Gagne and Kathy Chiarello

Jean Gagne
Congratulations to January's Volunteers of the Month, Jean Gagne and Kathy Chiarello!

Jean is one of the hosts of Under the Radar (Mondays, 8-10 p.m.), co-manager of the station's Facilities Department, and "jack of all trades" when it comes to getting a job done or an event off the ground. When Jean volunteers to head up a project or be part of a team, he never lets us down. Kathy is Jean's sidekick, a Portsmouth Community Radio member, and a dedicated volunteer who always lends a hand with the tasks Jean offers to do.

Kathy Chiarello
The station's Halloween Parade marching unit was bigger and better this past year because of the energy, enthusiasm, and fun that Kathy and Jean brought to the evening. Even more notable was the effort they both put in to make sure that the Portsmouth Community Radio entry in the 2011 Festival of Trees came to life. Jean and Kathy picked out the tree as well as all the decorations that made it so memorable.

So, to Jean and Kathy, thank you for your help on these projects, all that you have done in the past, and all that you continue to do for Portsmouth Community Radio!

From the Top: A Note from Board Chair Ann Bliss

Ann BlissWhat does the Board of Trustees do anyway? Who are its members? I'm afraid the long answer to the first question might put you to sleep, so I'll be brief as I can be.

The Board has many important responsibilities, chief among them a fiscal one. This responsibility for the financial well-being of the radio station leads directly to the Board's stewardship of the radio station's mission and purpose. The Board needs to review that mission periodically to make sure it is indeed being achieved, directing and maintaining the station on a viable, sustainable path.

Our primary commitment, of course, is to you, our listening community. Our mission mandates that we deliver a diversity of community-focused programming that reflects your interests and tastes, with an eye to engaging with the community both broadly and deeply. We rely on you for the financial support we need to continue in this service.

We are also committed to an open-door policy that welcomes all volunteers - both those who aspire to be on-air hosts and those who choose to work in support roles. We welcome our volunteers, are grateful for their service, and seek to provide them with the support and direction they need to thrive in our environment and to contribute to the success of our mission.

High on the Board's list of objectives is the hiring of a full-time, paid General Manager, something the station has never had. To that end, we have made a commitment to focus on a capital campaign to raise $100,000. Our campaign goal is listed on our website. If you click on the "donate" button, you can support our capital campaign with a donation and you can also sign up for a membership.

In the meantime, as we operate without a General Manager, the responsibility for organizational planning and development and for working with our Department Heads and volunteers to support the station's goals falls to the Board.

Meet the Trustees: Dennis Malloy

With this issue, Tidings begins a new feature, introducing each member of our Board of Trustees, one at a time. As you'll see, Portsmouth Community Radio's Trustees bring to the Board very different career backgrounds and life experiences, collectively representing a valuable resource to our radio station and its members. One thing they all seem to have in common, though, is a commitment to volunteerism and long histories of service to non-profit organizations.
dennis

This month, we put the spotlight on our newest Trustee, Dennis Malloy, who was elected to the Board at its most recent meeting on January 10.

Dennis, who retired some months ago from New Hampshire Public Television (NHPTV), where he was Chief Development Officer, comes to us with extensive experience in radio and television broadcasting. For nearly 30 years, he held senior management positions in both commercial and non-commercial radio and television stations.

His career was launched in Des Moines, Iowa, when, barely out of high school, he worked as an on-air announcer at a local AM station. Later, after graduating from college, he continued in broadcasting, becoming Station Manager at a 100,000-watt commercial FM station.

After moving to New Hampshire and joining NHPTV, Dennis served on the senior leadership team that developed both strategic and tactical plans for the public television station. In his role of Chief Development Officer, he also focused on developing and sustaining long-term relationships, serving in statewide business organizations, and directly soliciting donations from foundations, corporations, and individuals.

He currently serves as a selectman for the town of Barrington, New Hampshire, and is a member of Leadership New Hampshire, where he serves on the Development Committee. His volunteer work includes service for the American Red Cross, the American Cancer Society, and a number of public radio boards of directors.

WSCA First Night Street Dance a Rousing Success

first night 2012
This past New Year's Eve brought decent weather and another very successful WSCA First Night Street Dance in Portsmouth's Market Square. A big "thank you" to all who contributed to the evening's success: John "Supersport" Scavo, Sharon Jones, Kate Mitchell, Robin Nitschelm, Jean Proulx, Anita Croteau, Jean Gagne, and especially Peter "Rocky" Smith, who handled the equipment setup and ran the soundboard for much of the evening. Also, special thanks goes out to Eric Reuter of Reuter Associates, LLC, who once again loaned his PA System to Portsmouth Community Radio.

As the volunteers were packing up at 12:15 a.m., a rather sweaty woman who was retrieving her coat commented that, for the past several years, she and her friends have had a great time just hanging out in the street all night dancing to the music Portsmouth Community Radio has played. DJs and other volunteers who have participated all say it's a real thrill to play music for hundreds of people and actually see how much they enjoy what Portsmouth Community Radio does.

Once again, kudos to all who have contributed over the years to this great public event!

Portsmouth Community Radio Programming Notes

Under the Radar: "Big Band Monday" to Air February 6

Under the Radar: "Big Band Monday," with host Steve Shervanian, airs the first Monday of each month from 8 to 10 p.m. on Portsmouth Community Radio. It's the only show on the Seacoast dedicated solely to big band swing music.

On Monday, February 6, Steve will bring you another swingin' show featuring the Andrews Sisters. You'll hear them do their own original recordings, as well as covers of songs made famous by their contemporaries. They may have been a vocal group, but they brought to the forefront the attitude of swing. If that isn't enough, the show will feature Glen Gray and his Casa Loma Orchestra, who were the first American band to cultivate an intimate approach to ballads. You'll hear tunes from this famous band dating from 1932 and 1933. Once you listen, you'll understand why they were able to bridge from breakneck instrumentals to more relaxed rhythms.

If you like big bands, swing music, and plenty of horns, tune in to Under the Radar: "Big Band Monday" the first Monday of each month from 8 to 10 p.m. on Portsmouth Community Radio.

The Burt Cohen Show to Present Special Interview

Burth Cohen
Burt Cohen
Tune in to The Burt Cohen Show (Tuesdays, 12-1 p.m.) in February for a special interview with
Colin Woodard, author of The Eleven Nations of North America.

In his book, Woodard explains that if you look at the different regions of the United States, you'll see unique regional characters that were set during their settling by various groups of Europeans. Woodard argues that we should expect very different borders in the next hundred years, reflecting truer regions of commonality.

The date of this interview has yet to be determined, so tune in every Tuesday in February so you won't miss it!

diversity
On the January 13 Radiogazette (Fridays, 9-10 a.m.), Charlie Griffin interviewed (left to right) Richard Haynes, local artist and Director of Diversity Admissions at UNH; Sean McGhee, Director of Multicultural Affairs at UNH; and Jessica Kowalski, a senior at Portsmouth High School. The subject was a diversity dialogue workshop conducted with students at Portsmouth High School around the theme "What Diversity Means to Our Generation." The workshop culminated with students selecting and painting a mural reflecting that theme, which will initially be displayed in February at the Portsmouth Public Library, and after that permanently in the lobby at Portsmouth High School. Ms. Kowalski's entry was chosen for the mural.
