Dear Friends,
At this time of year, we focus on giving thanks, and we at Portsmouth Community Radio would like to take this opportunity to thank you, our members, listeners, and volunteers, for all of your support over the seven years that we've been on the air. Without you, none of what we do would be possible.
It's also the time of year when we hold our annual fall Pledge Drive. This year's drive will be held December 2-8, and we're asking all who listen to and rely on Portsmouth Community Radio to give what they can. Read on for Board Chair Ann Bliss's plea for your support.
This issue of Tidings also includes a story about our live coverage of the local elections earlier in November, news about our popular Radiogazette and Under the Radar programs, and a welcome to a new member of our Board of Trustees.
Thank you for reading, thank you for listening, and have a Happy Thanksgiving!

Important Event Pledge Drive Fall 2011: It's All About Sustainability
Webster's Dictionary defines sustainability as "relating to or being a method of harvesting or using a resource so that the resource is not depleted or permanently damaged."
Our resource is you, our listening and volunteer community. Our method of harvesting is our biannual Pledge Drive, when we ask you to renew your membership, become a member, or make a donation over and above your membership dues to help with our operating costs. Our objective is sustainability.
This year we're introducing the option of a sustaining donation, a monthly donation of whatever you can afford without depleting your personal resources. You can do this simply by visiting our website or by calling the station at 603-430-9722 during our Pledge Drive, which runs from 6 a.m. on Friday, December 2, to midnight on Thursday, December 8.
Now in its eighth year, Portsmouth Community Radio is a non-profit, volunteer-operated radio station offering a diversity of programs you'll find nowhere else on the dial. There's jazz, classical, folk, and every kind of rock 'n' roll . . . and that's only the music. There's also political talk from all sides, local news and information, and live broadcasts from out in the community. You can hear Don't Dis My Ability, which focuses on the issues and needs of those with brain damage or other physical or mental challenges. Then there's Live From Market Square, which supports local businesses in downtown Portsmouth, as reporters interview tourists and local folks on what they love about Portsmouth and the surrounding area. Although we are a volunteer-operated station, we naturally have operating costs. Without your support, the bills cannot get paid. Membership is only $35 for an individual, $65 for a family or couple, and $20 for seniors and students.
A sustaining monthly donation of even $10 would be so helpful to our station. We need, for example, new microphones so we can continue to bring you top-quality remote broadcasts. Your donation helps build community capacity, and that is one huge gift to us all. Thank you, and I wish you all a fulfilling holiday season. Ann Bliss, Board Chair |
With Gratitude
Volunteer of the Month: Cindy Bistoury
Mother, teacher, actress, script supervisor, Sesame Street fan extraordinaire, and WSCA's Renaissance woman, Cindy Bistoury is Portsmouth Community Radio's Volunteer of the Month for November.
Cindy, a New Hampshire native who currently resides in Maine with her son, has been involved in acting all of her life and recently served as script supervisor for Breakaway, a science-fiction film shot in Portsmouth and recently shown at a local film festival.
Cindy has also starred as an extra in a film with Adam Sandler and hopes to become a segment producer on Sesame Street in a few years. Despite her busy schedule, Cindy still finds time to volunteer for Portsmouth Community Radio and is among the first to say "yes" when calls for assistance go out. Most recently, she recruited people to be interviewed on Live From Market Square.
Thank you, Cindy, for your positive attitude, tireless energy, and willingness to take on any task when needed!

Attendees of the "Sunday Soirée, Italian Style" - our special fund-raising event held on November 13 - each received a copy of this beautiful book. Thank you, Nancy!

City Election Results: You Heard Them Here First
When Portsmouth's polls closed at the end of the voting day on November 8, and the votes were tallied, Portsmouth Community Radio listeners were the first to learn that Eric Spear was the apparent Mayor-elect.
Kudos to the members of our volunteer news team, who were on the scene, in the wards, and in our Islington Street studio reporting all the results of the citywide elections as soon as they became available. A round of applause, too, for our own Charlie Griffin, who conducted interviews with candidates at city hall. And special thanks to legendary Seacoast radioman Dick Rozek, who joined Charlie in the studio to get the word out to listeners.
Commenting on his election-night experience at Portsmouth Community Radio, Rozek had this to say: "WSCA established itself as a broadcast station that is now a vital force within and for the community. . . . The coverage was nearly flawless in your live vote-count reporting, Charlie's superb on-site interviews and commentaries, and John Lovering's handling of technical demands. It was a solid performance of what a good TEAM can accomplish."
