Dear Friends,

In this issue you will find news of important new appointments in our Music Department, some exciting new programming, comments about Don't Dis My Ability from a listener in the Netherlands, and our Volunteer of the Month.

In addition, we have an excellent article on a new program that utilizes our remote broadcast gear and the support of several local businesses, to help make Portsmouth Community Radio more visible in the seacoast community.

We have also included news of a very special guest appearing on Pawsitive Thoughts on July 28th, and an article on one of our most dedicated volunteers publishing a book.

Finally, we tucked in a little lesson on the history of radio. Did you know the first commercial broadcast station in the United States was only a 75 watt station with the call letters KDKA?  Learn more about our "radio roots."

We thank you for subscribing to Tidings, and hope that you will help us spread the word about WSCA-LP by telling your relatives, friends, and neighbors about our great community radio station.

Thank you.

Angelynne Koromilas Hinson (photo) has been named MusicAngelynne Hinson_Host of Morning Voices  Director at Portsmouth Community Radio (WSCA, 106.1 FM), it was announced by Ann Bliss, Chair of the station's Board of Trustees.

"I can't tell you how pleased we are to have Angelynne in this very important position at Portsmouth Community Radio. It means that we now have the three critical pieces in place that will help us move into the future as we seek to expand our listening audience on the seacoast in fulfillment of our stated mission of offering programming that reflects the interests and tastes of the community we serve."

Earlier, Bliss explained, Damon Thomas was named to the position of Director Programming and, later, Ann Haggart was appointed Director of News & Public Affairs.

The new Music Director, Ms. Hinson, is herself a performing vocalist with an impressive musical background not only as a performer but as an educator. Her knowledge of music runs the gamut from pop to classical and everything in between. Additionally, she has served in management/educational roles at the Cantata Singers of Boston; the York County Regional Fine Arts Program; A.I.R. (Arts in Reach), Portsmouth; and the New Hampshire Theatre Project; among others. Ms. Hinson is host of the weekly program Morning Voices, heard Fridays (6 to 9 am) on Portsmouth Community Radio and co-host of OperaWorks Radio (Sundays, 5 to 7 pm). She is also a member of the Boards of Trustees at The Music Hall, The Portsmouth Athenaeum, and the Portsmouth Historical Society.

Terry Blake_Assistant Music Director_Co-Host of Fan TalkAdditionally, it was announced, Terry Blake (photo) has been named Assistant Music Director at the radio station. Blake, who joined Portsmouth Community Radio as a DJ in 2010, has been an invaluable team player, according to Bliss. "Terry has pitched in on a long list of assignments," she said, "and for several months has been the central figure in our music department, managing the influx of new recordings that come in every single day. Terry's knowledge of popular music and local bands will be important as we move forward."

Volunteer of the Month

Robin Nitschelm Is Our Volunteer of the Month

Robin Nitschelm_Volunteer of the Month June 2011Robin Nitschelm, Tidings Volunteer of the Month for July, is the co-host of What Can I Say?, with Rob Kanzer. The personal relations show, which airs the fourth Wednesday of every month, is only the beginning of Robin's dedication to WSCA.

Rob beams, "Robin is an amazing producer who finds us interesting guests and music interludes related to the subject matter we are delivering." He also commends her cheerfulness, humbleness, and capabilities as an executive assistant.

Her commitment to the station goes beyond her show with Rob. Robin's most used question is, "What can I do to help?" Whether it's an upcoming meeting, helping with the station's involvement with a community event, or lending a hand in completing a station mailing or other general paperwork, Robin can be found in the midst of the volunteers helping to complete the project.

Robin almost never turns down an opportunity to volunteer and has even involved her son in events such as the "Festival of Trees" in 2009.

Jean Proulx, our volunteer coordinator adds, "Thank you, Robin, for your dedication, willingness to help so often, your kindness to all and wonderful attitude no matter what the task!"

Katie Stewart

Katie's The More Than Ordinary Show will be providing all the area's ska, pop, and rock enthusiasts with a new listening outlet.

The new program will also offer local bands the opportunity for some airplay. "I'll be featuring as many local bands as I can find," Katie says.

Katie is asking that if anyone has a band, or knows someone in a ska, pop, or rock band who would want to be featured on the show, to please e-mail her at kstewart@wscafm.org.

When Katie first joined WSCA, she mainly worked behind the scenes helping DJs make promos and editing audio. Now she is taking this new opportunity to share her own musical
tastes with the seacoast community.

Pawsitive Thoughts Welcomes Author
Andrew Westoll

On July 28th, Jean Proulx, host of Pawsitive Thoughts (Thursdays, 2-3 pm), will interview Canadian author Andrew  Author Andrew Westoll Westoll (photo left) about his book The Chimps of Fauna Sanctuary.

Mr. Westoll's book has received excellent reviews. As an example, in the words of Jane Goodall:
"The Chimps of Fauna Sanctuary is a true story of endurance and resilience, compassion, dedication and love. I knew the prison-like conditions of the medical research facility from which Gloria Grow rescued these chimpanzees; when I visited them at their new sanctuary I was moved to tears. Finally they had reached a secure haven where, gradually, they could recover from their years of torment. Andrew Westoll is a born story teller: The Chimps of FaunaChimps of Fauna Sanctuary- Book Cover  Sanctuary, written with empathy and skill, tenderness and humor, involves us in a world few understand. And leaves us marveling at the ways in which chimpanzees are so like us, deserve our help, and are entitled to our respect." Jane Goodall PhD., DBE is Founder of the Jane Goodall Institute and UN Messenger of Peace.

Watch an author video here.  Hear the author's words on Pawsitive Thoughts with Jean Proulx on Thursday, July 28th between 2 and 3 pm.

From Our Listeners

Don't Dis My Ability Draws Appreciation
from Overseas

Ronnie Tomanio, one of the hosts of Don't Dis My Ability, recently received an email from Annique Timmerman, a
twenty-one-year-old listener in the Netherlands.

Annique, who has Asperger's syndrome, wrote to express

her appreciation for the show. "I have to say I was very impressed with your work with disabled people," she wrote. "Thanks to people like you who dedicate their time, the stigma [of disability] is slowly but surely getting less, and we can begin to be proud about who we are and make our specific contributions to the world, in whatever way we can. I was very pleased to find that Don't Dis My Ability is archived on the Internet. I will give it a listen from now on, because radio like this surely enriches people's lives."

Annique wrote that she works "at a shop run by organizations that offer assisted living and working environments for people of all neurotypes, but specifically autism . . . [Now] I feel like I have a purpose. Because service is not just for people who are without an apparent 'blemish,' it's something everyone can offer and feel nourished by. . . . Thank you for broadcasting this message of [empowerment] f
or the disabled."

Thank you for listening, Annique!

Have You Heard?

Uncle Ezekiel's Used Pyramid Emporium with Bob Cochran (Sundays, 1-3 pm)

The way Bob Cochran (photo)Bob Cochran - Uncle Ezekiels Used Pyramid Emporium host tells it, he washed up on York Beach, following an ill-fated attempt to reach Peaks Island aboard a raft built from generic seltzer tablets.

"I was eventually rescued by a large chimpanzee who had escaped from captivity," he explains. "The chimp dragged me through downtown Portsmouth, finally deserting me to have himself a nice breakfast and do his laundry. Finding my way down to the radio station, I proceeded to play some cetacean rap along with some jazz and world music. The program director heard it and exclaimed, 'This sounds great! Could you do it every week?' Thus the program was born, each week featuring a mix of jazz, world music, and comedy."

The Personal Side

Deirdre Hebert Publishes Book

Tidings is very excited to share with you the news that one of WSCA's most devoted and long-time volunteers, DeirdreDeirdre Hebert  Hebert (photo), has recently published a book.

Her work, The Pagan in Recovery:
The Twelve Steps from a Pagan Perspective
, is now available for sale online, and within the next few months it will be available to order at bookstores.

The book provides a source for those looking for a recovery program that caters to those who don't view "God, as we understood him," as many well known programs do (i.e. AA, NA, Al-Anon). "The book is not intended to replace other Twelve Step programs, but instead, to allow Pagans in recovery an opportunity to experience whatever Twelve Step program they are working in a uniquely Pagan way," Dee states.

Dee's book is currently available at Asphodel Press or at Lulu.com. To view Dee's author page check out http://www.lulu.com/spotlight/deirdrehbrt.

Congratulations, Deirdre.

The History of Broadcast Radio - KDKA 1920

By John Lovering
Host of Audio Theatre (Tuesdays, 6-8 pm)

The first commercially licensed broadcast station in the U.S.A. was located in a shack on the roof of the Westinghouse Electric and Manufacturing Company building in East Pittsburgh, PA.

KDKA's First TransmitterThe 75 watt station, (photo, left) KDKA, went on the air November 2nd, 1920 with the announcement of the presidential election returns between Warren G. Harding and James M. Cox.

It is estimated that between 500 and 1000 listeners heard the historic transmission. (Listen to a portion of that broadcast).

After the election, KDKA set aside one hour each night forVintage Radio Listeners using headphones a
regularly scheduled broadcast, generally playing songs from the host-DJ-engineer, Dr. Frank Conrad's private 78 RPM record collection. Since the early radios did not have speakers, listeners used headphones to hear the sound from their radios.

By 1922 there were about 200 licensed stations and less than 60,000 families owned radios. By 1930, with 300 stations, the number of home radios was well over 13,000,000.

At the same time, radios became more sophisticated. Difficult-to-tune crystal radio sets were replaced by tube sets, which allowed clearer and more precise reception.

Couple around antique radioAlso gone were the headphones. Loudspeakers were now built into the sets, allowing the entire family to listen simultaneously to the same program.

Radio became more than a curiosity in most homes; it was treated as a beautiful piece of furniture and generally occupied a prominent place in the living room.

The Golden Age of Radio had arrived.
