Happy Fourth of July

Dear Friends,

It appears as if we skipped spring and have leaped into summer.

Often summer can provide people the opportunity to listen to the radio at different times from those that are available when they are at their workplace. We hope that you will get the chance to tune in to some of our programs that you may not have heard in the past.

Check out our Programming Schedule and note that we now have several new shows airing locally on WSCA-LP at 106.1 FM, and streaming worldwide via the Internet at www.wscafm.org.

Finally, please help us spread the word about one of the best community radio stations in the country. Tell your friends and neighbors about Portsmouth Community Radio.

Have a safe and happy Fourth of July.

Americana to Zydeco Goes on Hiatus

Bjorn Turnquist (photo) has announced that his program, Americana to Zydeco, will be taking a summer hiatus. HeBjorn Turnquist hopes to return in the fall, either doing the same show, revamping, or doing something totally different.

Bjorn and his wife, Jody, have been busy opening their 3 Bridges Yoga Studio, and he feels that, after four years of volunteering at the station, now is the time for a little break.

In a statement to Tidings, Bjorn wrote, "WSCA is a wonderful place to express yourself and your talent through community and independent radio. It's a great place to hear new music, new ideas, and get a break from typical commercial radio programming.

"Portsmouth Community Radio is a Seacoast staple for being an open-minded and open-door place where people of all walks of life can come together for a common cause."

He concluded his comments with, "I'll be back."

We are glad to hear that, and we thank Bjorn for all the work and effort he has committed to the station as a General Manager, DJ, and friend.

Turn It Up with Jim Alvino
(Saturdays, 6-8 pm)

Jim Alvino has a mission, which is to prove that artists such as KISS, Van Halen, Sammy Hagar, Motley Crue and othersJim Alvino - DJ Turn It Up of that ilk had way more hits than the one song apiece that commercial radio remembers them for. On Turn It Up (Saturdays, 6-8 pm), Jim focuses on classic Hard Rock and Heavy Metal, as well as the new stuff, featuring mostly artists from the "hair band" era and the music that came roaring out of the Sunset Strip in the late 1970s and right up into the early 1980s.

Jim grew up in Portland with a love of music and a hankering to get on the radio someday. Today that dream has come true. And you can live it with him. Be sure to tune in and Turn It Up.

WSCA Audio Theatre Players Air Audio

Adaptation of Eudora Welty Short Story

John Lovering, Host of Audio Theatre

On Tuesday, July 5th between 6 and 8 pm, Audio Theatre host, John Lovering (photo left), will rebroadcast our WSCA Audio Theatre Players' performance of their radio adaptation of Eudora Welty's popular comedic short story, Why I Live at the PO.

As an author, Eudora Welty masterfully captured Southern idiom, and placed great importance on location and customs.

Why I Live at the PO is set in the South about 1941. The main character is called Sister, and the story is about how she ends up living at the Post Office as a result of her interaction with her extremely aggravating family.

Our talented cast includes (l-r photo) HelenCast of Why I Live at the PO Ksypka, Kathy Somssich, Barbara Hilton, Bruce Allen, and John Suprenant.

The short story was adapted for radio by John Lovering and Helen Ksypka. Vocal direction was done by Helen Ksypka, with recording, editing, and sound effect done by John Lovering.

The recording session took place at our 909 Islington Street studio on May 2nd, and the show was aired on June 8th, 2005.

This is only the second time that our listeners have had the opportunity to hear this excellent production. Be sure to tune in on Tuesday, July 5th from 6 to 8 pm for Audio Theatre and Why I Live at the PO.

Big Band Mondays on Under the Radar Plans
S
pecial July 4th Show

Big Band Mondays_Steve Shevanian
Steve Shervanian

On the first Monday of each month from 8 to 10 pm,you can go "Swinging with the Big Bands" with host Steve Shervanian (wscautr@yahoo.com). It's the only show on the Seacoast dedicated to the big band swing era.

Each Big Band Mondays show features an artist, composer or band from America's golden era. June's show, for instance, highlighted the music of composer Cole Porter, including recordings of his music by Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Artie Shaw and others.

Looking ahead, the July 4th edition of Big Band Mondays will feature the music of Bob Crosby and the Bobcats. This younger and lesser known brother of Bing Crosby was discovered by bandleader Ben Pollack, who clearly had an eye (and an ear) for talent, which led him to discover many of the musicians who went on to help power the entire swing era - including Benny Goodman, Jack Teagarden, Irving Fazola, Glenn Miller, Jimmy McPartland, Harry James and others. Ironically, Crosby's "Bobcats" band was formed with dissident members of the band led by Ben Pollack, who came to be viewed as neglecting band matters in favor of his romantic pursuits.

Don't expect to hear just the hits of the swing era on Steve's show, though (the show's not called Under the Radar for nothing). You'll hear songs and special versions of them that are not normally played on the radio, including  radio transcriptions, live-in-concert cuts, V-discs and alternate takes. You'll also hear tidbits about the musical celebrities and events of those days. Got a request? Just let Steve know.

That's Big Band Mondays on Under the Radar, with host Steve Shervanian, on the first Monday of every month. Oh, and Steve wants you to know he does love you madly!

The Personal Side

Our Mostly Excellent Alaskan Adventure

by Terry MacDonald

Vice-Chairman of the Board and

Host of Jazz Straightahead (Wednesdays, 6-9 am)

For the moment, let's overlook the fact that the airline lost my luggage and that I didn't re-connect with it until the fourth day of our trip, in Juneau, Alaska. Let's ignore, too, the fire that broke out on the second deck at 2:00 am on the first night of the cruise. And why bring up the medical emergency that cost us three hours of travel time on our way to our final port of call so that we never got to see Victoria, British Columbia, except from our ship cabin's verandah? All that aside, it was a fun trip.

Peg and Terry MacDonald
Peg and Terry MacDonald in the misty fjords near Ketchikan, Alaska

Peg and I had never cruised before, nor had we seen Alaska.
I can't say that I've become a great fan of cruising, but it is a good way to see Alaska. Our ship took us north on open ocean to Juneau, our first port of call, where we saw lots of whales, as well as eagles, harbor seals, sea lions, seat otters, even a bear. We then cruised a little further north to Hubbard Glacier, an amazing natural spectacle. From there, we cruised south, through the inland passage, to our other ports of call. These included Sitka, where I spent a half-day salmon fishing (no salmon caught on my boat, but I did catch a rockfish) and Ketchikan, where Peg and I enjoyed a float plane tour of the misty fjords (see photo). The latter was undoubtedly the highlight of the trip. It was breathtaking.

As for the mishaps (above), the lesson is: Avoid beginning a trip on Friday the 13th. But if you can't, at least don't accept seat assignments 13A and 13B.

Making Waves Referenced in New Zealand Student's Master's Thesis

Amy Antonnuci and Steve Diamond - Co-Hosts Making WavesMaking Waves (Saturdays, noon-1 pm), with co-hosts Steve Diamond and Amy Antonucci (photo), was referenced by New Zealand student Rufus William McEwan in his Master's thesis at Auckland University of Technology. The thesis was part of his Master of Communication Studies degree program.

The thesis discussed how radio on the Internet is used as a tool of political discussion and in the creation of public spheres.

Making Waves received significant coverage (Chapter 5, pages 85-91) in Mr. McEwan's thesis. You can find the reference here.

We thank Matthew Craig, a WSCA volunteer, for alerting us to this very interesting piece of news, and congratulate Steve and Amy for their many years of work and dedication in producing such a fine program as
Making Waves.
