Dear Friends,

This issue of Tidings is arriving a little later than usual in order to allow us to include a report on the results of our Spring Seed the Power Fund Drive that concluded on May 12th.

As might be expected after a big event such as a fund drive, we have many people to thank. We make every effort to recognize those individuals and businesses that contribute their time, effort, goods and services, and, of course, their financial support. Without their support, none of what we do here would be possible. We do not take their generosity for granted.

As we move toward summer, keep listening, because no matter how warm it might be outside, you can be sure there is always something very cool going on-the-air at 106.1 FM.

Finally, Portsmouth Community Radio honors our current military personnel, veterans, and their families for their service, dedication, and sacrifice.

Report From Our Campaign Coordinator,
Jean Proulx

Fund Drive Leader and Volunteer Coordinator, Jean Proulx
Jean Proulx

Due to the efforts of our dedicated volunteers, members, and listeners, the WSCA Seed the Power Spring Membership Campaign was a great success. We especially appreciate those listeners who became new members of our Portsmouth Community Radio family. I also want to offer a big thank-you to Darci Knowles for designing our Seed the Power logo.

A very special thank-you to Amy Antonucci, co-host of Making Waves (Saturdays, Noon to 1 pm),
Katie Stewart, our intern, and
TerryAddressing Letters Blake, Interim Music Department Coordinator, host of Seacoast Scene (Mondays, 3-5 pm), and co-host of Fan Talk (Saturdays, 8-10 pm), for combining their efforts with a group of ambitious volunteers who spent two nights putting together more than 1200 letters that made up the very successful mailing portion of our campaign.

Many thanks go to other members of our Spring Membership Campaign Team: Peter Smith, John Scavo, host of Scratchy 45's and Beyond (Saturdays, 10 am-Noon), and Melissa Fischette, who arranged meals for the volunteers who worked at the station during our drive.

Though our goal of 500 new or renewing members has not yet been attained, we believe it is likely to happen, as each day more membership forms and checks arrive in the mail.

On May 12th, the end of our on-air campaign, we were close to the $13,000 mark, and I have no doubt that we could see $15,000 or more. A final tally will be published in the June issue of Tidings.

Volunteer of the Month

George Toscano, Board of Trustees Member
and Our Treasurer

Tidings' Volunteer of the Month for May, George Toscano, earns the distinction of being the longest running Board member with Portsmouth Community Radio. George began volunteering and was subsequently voted to the Board as Treasurer, in 2003. George took on the integral role of bookkeeping and accounting for the station as our fundraising efforts increased.

George Toscano

While generally soft-spoken, he has always been a consistently thoughtful and constructive voice during Board meetings.

Previous to joining the station, George had experience working as treasurer for several non-profits and was introduced to WSCA by Tim Stone through their mutual work at Seacoast Big Brothers Big Sisters.

"George's contributions to Portsmouth Community Radio as a Board Member and Treasurer have been invaluable, and he deserves much credit for 'sticking it out' as long as he has," says Stone. Read More...

New Underwriting Sales Team Assembled

Taking Portsmouth Community Radio's underwriting sales efforts in a new direction, the station has announced that, from now on, these activities will be conducted not by a single Underwriting Sales Representative but by a Sales Team. Underwriting Logo

First to raise her hand to join the team was Meg Middleton, a longtime WSCA volunteer and co-host of Wake Up (Thursdays, 8-10 am). Meg immediately took steps to help recruit others to the team, which now includes Jenny Freeman, host of Soul Vaccination (alternate Thursdays, 6-8 pm), as well as Kate Mitchell, host of Mama's Hot House (Sundays, 9-11 pm), and volunteer Amber Lily French. As a special bonus, Nancy Beach, another co-host of Wake Up, has agreed to bring her experience in underwriting at WBUR, Boston's NPR station, as a consultant to the team.

If you think you might like to volunteer your services by joining the new Underwriting Sales Team, contact underwriting@wscafm.org . By the way, Read More...

Please Welcome

A New Addition to Our Tidings Staff

Maggie Intro PicMaggie Doherty, a native of the Philadelphia suburbs, has been living and working on the Seacoast for nearly three years.

Maggie moved here after receiving her B.A. in English from Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, NY. She currently works at a café in downtown Portsmouth and enjoys cooking, reading, and dancing in her free time.

She is glad to be volunteering for WSCA and excited to lend her writing abilities to the Tidings staff.

New on the Schedule

Mama's Hot House, Sundays 9-11 PM

Mama's Hot House is the newest show on WSCA-LP, airing Sunday nights from 9-11 pm. Listeners can expect to hear a fun, funky mix of genres shared in efforts of "planting seeds for the love of music." Your host, Kate Mitchell (Mama), is more than ecstatic to be back on air sharing the vast library of songs she has picked up along the way.

Kate Mitchell

As a classic "music junky" she has been intrigued by hip hop, turntablism, funk, reggae, electro-pop, indie rock, folk, rock, world music, jam bands and classics (which in Mama's case means Prince and Michael Jackson). Mama also loves to share the talents of her musical friends, some of whom may be known, some of whom should be known. By the end of the night the listener can expect a solid dance session or two, a few smiles prompted by favorite songs, and the scribbled names of new artists or songs on the nearest pad of paper as reference for your next visit to the record store.  Read more about Mama's Hot House...

Volunteers Help Set Up New Mailboxes for the Station

Whoever declared paper and snail mail were dead clearly did not work at a flourishing radio station. In the past six years, WSCA and its volunteer base have grown substantially, and with all this development came the need for a larger mailbox system.

The original system, while sufficient for the early stages ofTom Farrell installs Mailbox system the station, could not contain the volume of mail and music coming in from artists and record companies.

Therefore, a big thank-you goes out to our generous volunteers, Tim Ferrell (photo) and Seth McNally, for building the new boxes.

With such limited space in the station, much thought and planning went into the placement of our new "post offices" within our cozy facility. Thanks to Jean Gagne co-host of Under the Radar (Mondays, 8-10 pm), for his role in this phase of the project.

And finally, an extra thank-you to Tim Ferrell for his efforts in delivering and setting up the mailboxes. Next time you swing by the station, feel free to check them out.

Portsmouth Community Radio Goes On Location

Peter Smith has had a very busy spring, coordinating several remote broadcasts for WSCA-LP. We appreciate all the time and energy he has put into all these events.

Using our new remote equipment, Portsmouth Community Radio, with our host Tim Stone, did a live broadcast of the Seacoast Media Group's 2011 Spotlight Awards from the Portsmouth Music Hall on April 14th.

Soul Vaccination Alternating Thursdays 6-8 PM

Fans of Soul Vaccination know that this is one of Portsmouth Community Radio's first shows, having gone on the air back in the fall of 2004. These days, the program is in the capableJenny Freeman hands of Jenny Freeman, who comes in to host every other Tuesday ( 6-8 pm), alternating with BlueJazzPel with Peter Langley.

Since she began, Jenny has been exploring the genre of soul, funk, and r&b in alphabetical order: "A" for Aretha, "B" for Brown (James, that is), and "C" for Charles. And, hey, it's not too late to catch up. What's upcoming? E-mail jfreeman@wscafm.org and find out.

Jenny lives in Kittery and works in the non-profit world. Clearly, she also has a soulful side. Please join her on Soul Vaccination for a dose of this great music.
