Dear Friends,

Spring is here and with the new season comes our Annual Spring Membership Drive. Our Spring and Fall Membership Drives are crucial to the financial survival of the station.

We ask for your continued financial support of Portsmouth Community Radio. Without your help we simply cannot continue to bring our wide diversity of programming to the airwaves of the Seacoast community as we have done since September 12, 2004.

Please check out the information about our upcoming Spring Membership Drive that is included in this issue of Tidings.
We ask you to please become a member, renew your membership or make a donation between May 6th to the 12th.

One of the best ways to help us build a base of supporters is for each of you to tell your friends and relatives about Portsmouth Community Radio. In addition, if you own a business or know someone who does, becoming an underwriter is an outstanding way to support WSCA-LP.

We thank you in advance for your support and are extremely grateful for all that you have done and will continue to do for your community radio station.

From May 6th to the 12th Portsmouth Community Radio will conduct its Spring Membership Drive, one of only two annual on-air fundraising events.

Everyone at the station will be working very hard to help raise the funds necessary to keep WSCA-LP broadcasting its wide diversity of programming that has become an integral part of the Seacoast.

All of the volunteers who work at the station are also contributing
members of Portsmouth Community Radio. We do what we do  because we believe in the value of community radio, but we simply cannot do it all on our own. We need you, our listeners, supporters and Underwriters, to contribute in order for this station to continue to exist.

Please help during the week of May 6th to the 12th by calling
603-430-9722 and renewing your membership, becoming a member, or making a pledge of any amount. If you own a business, consider becoming an underwriter as that is a great way to help out the station.

Remember Portsmouth Community Radio is part of the Seacoast Arts and Cultural Alliance and as such we are a non-profit 501C3 organization. Your contribution is tax deductible to the full extent
provided by law.

Thank you for all that you have done in the past to keep Portsmouth Community Radio a viable part of the Seacoast. We look forward to your continued support during the week of May 6th to the 12th.
Board News
Alan Brady Ends Term as Chair of the Board of Trustees  - Ann Bliss Elected as New Chairperson

On Tuesday, April 12th, Alan Brady stepped down from his position as Chairperson of the Board of Trustees, however he will remain on the Board until the end of April.

Alan BradyCiting family commitments with the addition of a new baby in the household, Alan felt that he could no longer dedicate the required time to the Board. He said his priorities now needed to be focused on his family. We commend him for the decision to put his family first.
We also thank Alan for his three years of service and dedication to Portsmouth Community Radio.

In speaking about the station, Alan said that he was proud of where the station is today, as he believes it is now viewed as a truly diverse community station. Alan thanked all the volunteers, supporters, and members of the Board of Trustees for their hard work and dedication in continuing to move Portsmouth Community Radio forward.

At this same meeting, the Board of Trustees voted member Ann Bliss as the new Chairperson.

Ann has been a Board member or a volunteer participantAnn Bliss in non-profit organizations for over 30 years, spanning her career as a mental health professional.

She founded and managed the Seacoast Crisis Response Team, trained 300-500 professionals in NH in Critical Incident Stress Management and, along with her husband, founded Seacoast Area Renewable Energy Initiative (SEAREI), for which she currently serves as President of the Board.

Ann indicated that her style of management is democratic and collaborative and that she invites discussion and creative thinking.  She joined Portsmouth Community Radio because she values the diversity and intention of the station to truly be a community voice in the Seacoast area.

Welcome, Ann, thank you for taking on the job of the Chairperson of our Board of Trustees. We look forward to working with you as Portsmouth Community Radio continues to develop and grow.

Volunteer of the Month

Kevin Caron - A New Volunteer Who Has Not Wasted Any Time Becoming Involved At WSCA-LP

Kevin Caron

Generally our "Volunteer of the Month" is someone who has been connected with the station for quite a number of months, but this month's honoree is an exception.

Kevin Caron has been here for only a short while, yet he has not wasted any time becoming deeply involved in volunteer activities.

Kevin worked with Adam Baer to design our new program schedule. Now he is undergoing training as a DJ, working on Module 3, which is the last training step before one is allowed to host his own program.

He has also fully immersed himself in our upcoming Spring Membership Drive. Kevin is one of four people on the Pledge Drive Committee, but he has volunteered to organize the May 4th
DJ Membership Drive Training party and help out with all the many tasks that a week-long membership drive involves.

And Kevin's enthusiasm continues as he has also volunteered to work with Tidings current managing editor, John Lovering (Audio Theatre, Tuesdays, 6 to 8 pm) and hopefully will take on the full editing responsibility when John passes the baton beginning with the October 2011 issue.

Thank You, Kevin Caron. Your work ethic and level of energy as a new volunteer at Portsmouth Community Radio is deeply appreciated and certainly has not gone unnoticed. Welcome to the WSCA family!

Damon Thomas Ends Nearly Five Years As Host of Sunday Afternoon's Dead Ahead Program

Damon Thomas_Program Director_Host of Dead Ahead

Damon Thomas, long-time DJ for Dead Ahead, hosted his final program on April 10th.

Dead Ahead (Sundays, 3 to 5 pm)
featured the music of the Grateful Dead and its related musical progeny including the Jerry Garcia Band, RatDog, Furthur, and others.

Part of our original programming lineup in 2004, Dead Ahead was started by
DJ-Engineer Jim Layton.

When Jim stepped down in August of 2006, Damon took over the reins and has merrily carried forth with presenting "the seacoast's only weekly radio show featuring nearly two hours of live Grateful Dead."

Damon will not totally disappear from our airwaves as from time to time he plans to air some of his favorite Grateful Dead music during open slots in the schedule. Meanwhile, he will devote his energies to his work as a station Trustee and Program Director.

Damon thanks all station volunteers and fellow DJs, as well as his broadcast and Internet audience, for their many forms of support throughout the past five years
.

Jean Gagne - Portsmouth Community Radio's "David" Takes On Our Kitchen "Goliath" and Wins!

Do you recognize the room in the photo below? Maybe not. You see, prior to April 5th, 2011, this room was a chaotic collection of boxes, furniture, old computer cases, pieces of wood, an old laser printer, and many strange items known only to anthropologists.

Clean Kitchen Area
 Jean Gagne

On April 5th, volunteer Jean Gagne (photo right) single-handedly undertook the immense task of cleaning up the kitchen storage area. He was our "David" and the kitchen was the "Goliath," and David won!

Thank you, Jean, for making our station environment a lot more organized.

Has anyone seen that special piece of wood that I left in the kitchen? Talk to Jean... if you dare.

Have You Heard?

Making Waves Co-Host Amy Antonucci Promotes Composting at Portsmouth Community Radio

I am a longtime composter and one of my resolutions for 2011 was to helpAmy Antonucci others compost. Chairperson of the Board of Trustees, Ann Bliss, donated some buckets and we have started a WSCA Compost Initiative

First, what we do and don't want you to put into the WSCA compost bucket, which you will find in the kitchen area of the station:

Do put in: Fruit and veggie waste, old/burnt/otherwise ruined grains, beans, veggies, fruits, coffee grounds, tea bags (but no staples), eggshells, shredded cardboard and newspaper.

Do not put in: Dairy products, fats, grease, oils, meat or fish bones and scraps, colored paper, tea bag staples, ash, or plastic stickers on fruit.

Next, go to this link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aBzriA2UANg

and hear the Marvelous Compost Bin Song, but remember to follow our advice on what to put in our bucket, not the advice given in the song lyrics.

Finally read more about why composting at home and at WSCA is such an important thing to do for our environment.

Making Waves (Saturdays, noon to 1 pm) is co-hosted by Amy Antonucci and Steve Diamond. Both Amy and Steve practice what they preach, following the philosophy of "sustainability" in living in harmony with their environment.

We believe our station offers a unique alternative to most of the radio programming available on the airwaves of the Seacoast.
So, we don't think it is a coincidence that a forward looking company that has built an entire division to promote and install alternative energy sources would help support Portsmouth Community Radio.

Waterline Alternative Energies is an affiliate of Waterline Industries Corporation. They are a New England basedWaterline Industries designer, distributor, and installer of solar, wind, and hydro electric power solutions.

Radio Activity

Programs You May Have Missed Logo

Many times personal schedules do not allow you to listen to the live broadcast of some of WSCA's News and Public Affairs programs.

Remember we have an Audio Archive available for you that allows you to stream or download these, and many other programs, and then listen to them at your convenience.

Below are a few examples of Public Affairs programming that you may have missed in the past few weeks. Listen to them and learn why we truly are a community radio station.

Note: Archived audio files are automatically time-recorded and as a result sometimes begin with the conclusion of the preceding program or a music clip from our automated DJ that we affectionately call Otis.
