Dear Friends, As our thoughts turn toward the warmer months ahead, we hope that you will regularly tune to 106.1 FM, perhaps on your portable listening device when you are out and about, or while relaxing at the beach. We will be here for you with our wide diversity of programming.
A reminder that during the summer, many of our programs feature live performances by artists who are playing at various venues throughout the Seacoast. Be sure to check our website for any special events and programming notices.
Our Spring Membership Drive is May 6-12. We thank you for your past support and sincerely hope you will continue to help keep Portsmouth Community Radio on the air. In addition, please tell your friends and relatives about WSCA and help us grow our base of listener-supporters.
Finally, after the winter we have experienced, we are particularly glad to be able to say to all, "Happy spring!"

Notable Event
National Homelessness Marathon Broadcast (February 23-24) Focused on Issue of Homelessness on Seacoast
 | | Jaspar Salach and Dee Hebert at the Homelessness Marathon. (photo:Tim Stone) |
In the following letter, Dee Hebert describes the overnight Homelessness Marathon live broadcast from the Vaughn Mall.
Dear WSCA Community,
I'm humbled and proud of what we, as a community, accomplished with this year's Homelessness Marathon. Any of us who produces a show knows that it's a lot of work, and this year our marathon was a very ambitious project. No one person could have pulled this off alone.
The comments I'm seeing via email are very touching - they show the pride that each of us rightly takes in what our station does, and can do. We are a vital part of the community, and each of us contributes to that.
What did it take to do the show we did this year? It took an idea - the idea that being out in the community would be a good thing to do. And from there, it took the direct effort of Rick Dirck, Peter "Rocky" Smith, Jasper Salach and myself, along with help from Jean Proulx. Brad Carr (DJ Big Brother) loaned us some music for the show. Volunteer of the Month
Shawn Henderson
When it comes to "doing it all," Shawn Henderson has been stepping up to the plate for the past six years.
His programs, Stay Tuned and Live Stay Tuned (Fridays 1:30-5PM) have featured an incredible number of live performances by local and visiting artists. Shawn's many contacts, combined with his thorough knowledge of the music industry, have helped make him a very skilled interviewer.
When it comes to helping the station raise money, Shawn has consistently offered his services to arrange concert dates and book outstanding performers.
Whether he is interviewing a true legend like Judy Collins, arranging a Deely Stan concert, or hosting his annual Thanksgiving All Day Beatles program, Shawn Henderson has been an outstanding volunteer in every sense of the word. __________________________________________________
Shawn's work has received worldwide recognition: E-Mail Dated 11/25/2010:
"Dear Shawn, I'm listening in the UK over the Internet, its now our early evening, dark and cold, your show is wonderful and warming!
Please repeat it next year.
Happy Thanksgiving, Mike Terry in Bournemouth, southern England" ___________________________________________________
Thank you, Shawn, for all that you do for Portsmouth Community Radio. We sincerely appreciate you.

New on the Schedule
Sharon Jones Returns To WSCA
Great News! Sharon Jones (photo) is back with her excellent program, Singers Past and Present. Sharon's popular
program can be heard at a new time and day, Thursdays 6-8 AM.
Sharon is a native of Portsmouth who has been delighting audiences here and beyond with her tremdous energy and great singing style for many years.
Her return to our airwaves is very welcome as she will once again be sharing her talents and knowledge of the music and its singers with listeners of Portsmouth Community Radio.
Welcome back, Sharon!
Emily Cherin is Host of All Things Gay
Emily Cherin (photo) returns to WSCA with a new program, All Things Gay (Mondays 8-9 AM), which is the "first all gay all the time radio show to hit NH."
The purpose of the program is to inform and entertain listeners on many topics related to being gay. "The show will contain personal stories of coming out, social happenings, music and artist spotlights, tons of humor, and plenty of gay sparkle."
Emily, a transplant from Boston, felt the area was lacking in media coverage of the gay community. She feels her new interview format show will help to fill the gap.
Welcome back to Portsmouth Community Radio, Emily.

Suicide Prevention Film Debuting at the Kremple's Center on March 9th Had Its Origin at Portsmouth Community Radio
by Ronnie Tomanio
Portsmouth Community Radio is a greenhouse that germinates ideas instead of vegetables. We know because one idea of ours grew from a little seed into a full blown project.
Ever since we have been on the air interviewing a wide variety of individuals with severe disabilities, the issue of suicide, thoughts of suicide, and even suicide attempts was mentioned, mostly in pre interviews. We felt that it was an issue we could not ignore. (Read more...)

Have You Heard?
WAKE UP - with Kathy, Meg, Brian & Nancy
Thursdays, 8-10 AM
Wake up to what's going on in the world, the nation and right here in our own community, as four local residents, all with a passion for politics, interpret it with their own special brand of irreverance and humor.
Each week, this provocative news/commentary program takes a look at the headlines of the day and offers its hosts' unapologetically progressive views on the events affecting our lives. And, whether you agree or disagree with those views, you can't ignore them. Kathy, Meg, Brian and Nancy (photo l-r) all demand honesty from our leaders and strive to keep their listeners informed on the hot topics of the day. They go where the mainstream is afraid to go, and, as you'll hear, they never hesitate to speak out on the issues.
Tune in for the laughs, the tears and the passion.

History of Our Seacoast Community
Did You Know?
Captain Dan Fernald was the oldest person in Portsmouth at the time of his death, which occurred March 7, 1866, at the age of 98 years 3 1/2 months. A soldier in the Revolutionary War, Fernald twice s neaked by the British delivering arms and battleship parts during the War of 1812.
Sailing out of Portland, bound for Portsmouth and carrying two 24-pound cannons, six tons of powder and cutlasses, Daniel's schooner, Sally, was stopped by a British tender off the coast of Saco. He was asked by a the Lieutenant in command, "What is your cargo?."
What was Dan Fernald's reply and how did he deceive the British Lieutenant? Find the answer here.
The fifth person to reply to Tidings and tell us the correct answers to the two questions above will win a one-year membership to the station and a very cool-looking WSCA T-shirt.
