Dear Friends,

Welcome to the February 2011 issue of Tidings.

It certainly has been a tough winter, but perhaps the cold and snowy weather has given you a little extra time to
check out the tremendous diversity of programming that we provide for our listeners. We certainly hope so.

We would like to ask you, our highly valued supporters, to help us spread the word about Portsmouth Community Radio by telling your friends and relatives about the station or perhaps by forwarding this newsletter to them.

We are proud of what we do here and would love to share

our station with as many listeners as possible.

Thank you.

Portsmouth Community Radio's Don't Dis' My Ability (Alternate Tuesdays, 3:30 - 4:15 PM) was mentioned in an article entitled It's a New Day for the Radio Dial written by Prometheus Radio Project's Brandy Doyle and published in the February issue of Radio World Magazine.

Scratchy 45's and Beyond Host John "Supersport" Scavo Featured in Portsmouth Herald Entertainment Section January 29th

John Scavo loves the scratchy old 45 rpm records, and for the most part, that's what he plays. "I could easly put my music on a CD:I have a home studio. But that takes the fun out of it. I love the pressure of the timing; love using the turntables. To others, it look like I'm a chicken with my head cut off, but I'm having a blast!  I want to take it off the vinyl. It's part of me - the geeky side." John Scavo.

In an excellent article about John "Supersport," Portsmouth Herald Entertainment reporter, Jeanné McCartin captures the essence of his Scratchy 45's and Beyond Show (Saturdays, 10 AM to Noon). It's gratifying for all of us at Portsmouth Community Radio to see one of our great DJs get the attention he deserves.

Congress Passes the Local
Community Radio Act - By Tim Stone

Ten years after Congress passed the Radio Broadcasting Act of 2000, which nearly crippled the FCC's new LPFM program by eliminating thousands of frequencies designated for LPFM stations, grassroots community radio supporters succeeded in achieving passage of the Local Community Radio Act. In January, President Barack Obama signed the Act. It restores the original closer station frequency spacing on the FM dial, potentially opening up opportunities for new LPFM stations across the country and particularly in more populated areas.

Volunteer of the Month - Jo Ann Paradis

Photo of JoAnn ParadisCongratulations to Jo Ann Paradis,
our Volunteer of the Month!

Not only has Jo Ann been the host of her very fine program Women Plus! (Saturdays, 2-4 PM), but for the past six years she has been a dedicated volunteer sharing the hosting duties on Making Waves (Saturdays Noon-1 PM)
and helping to manage the broadcast of the very popular Democracy Now (Mon-Fri, 5-6 PM).

Jo Ann's pleasant personality, helpful nature and great sense of humor make her a pleasure to have at the station. She modestly says, "I try to help where and when I can." There are many of us who can certainly attest to that, and we thank her so much for her years of dedication to Portsmouth Community Radio and the wonderful music she provides every Saturday afternoon.

Listener Thanks "Don't Dis' My Ability"

The following email was published with permission of the sender with the understanding that the name be withheld.

Good Day Wonderful WSCA,

My name is ____ and I have been living with a panic disorder my entire life.  Don't Dis My Ability made me feel like a winner... I am not embarrassed about my panic, but I was amazed to hear another share such intimate details of their life that were so directly relatable to my own. Thank you so much for this show. It really grabbed me deep this week and I can only imagine how many people's lives or even just their days have been made better by listening to the folks on this show. At the very least it lets other people know just how much we do and how much we accomplish with what was handed to us. I love listening to this show because hope lives on the airwaves every time they broadcast! They are always positive and making others feel better, especially those who might need just the right words...like me.

What a treasure! I am so thankful!

Sincere and Thankful Listener,

Under the Radar Goes Swingin' With

the Big Bands

On the first Monday of every month, listeners get to re-live those golden days of the Swing Era, from the '20s to the 50s' when Steve Shervanian (photo) comes in to host Big Band Mondays on Under the Radar (Mondays, 8-10 PM).Big Band Mondays Host Steve Shevanian

Steve's got it all: the music of Benny Goodman, Glen Miller, Artie Shaw, Stan Kenton, Lionel Hampton, Duke Ellington, Count Basie and more. And he serves it all up with a great mix of instrumentals and vocals, along with his fascinating insights into the music and the bands that played it, not to mention the eager fans who listened and danced to it... Updates...

Steve Diamond, Systems Administrator
Below is a list of items submitted by Steve Diamond (System Administrator) in an effort to inform readers of projects and upgrades that are ongoing by members of our Engineering Committee. It is through your financial support that many of these projects are possible. Thank you.

We now have a new photo gallery. It can be accessed  from our website at www.wscafm.org and then click on Zenphoto Gallery.

Computer system updates have been completed in our production room, Control B, and the lobby computer now has a scanner.

A simplified process for importing files to our new digital library is in place and ready for use. The goal is to eventually have all of our CD music library files transferred to our computers.

We thank Portsmouth Quality Flooring for installing a heavy duty metal edge on the access side of our anti-static tiles in Control A, our broadcast room.

Holway Electric will conduct a real-world test of our new 8 Kilowatt generator system and will be briefing the engineers on how the system operates. This test is scheduled for 3:30 PM on Tuesday, February 22nd. The station may go off the air for a few seconds as the power switches to the generator. We are now ready for power outages.

Eighteen people are currently taking the station's training modules that have been written, and in many cases taught, by Engineering Committee members. Once the modules are completed, the trainees will be ready to submit new show proposal ideas to our Programming Committee.
