Dear Friends,
Welcome to the January 2011 issue of Tidings. Beginning with this issue we happily announce that Terry Farish has joined our editing team.
As we begin the new year, we suggest one way that may help beat the mid-winter blues would be to check out our Program Schedule and listen to WSCA-LP. Of course we also hope you will attend our annual Fundraiser Dance with the Jeannie Daniels Band at the VFW Hall in Portsmouth on January 29th.
Thank you for supporting Portsmouth Community Radio. |

Homelessness Marathon Article by Deirdre Hebert
WSCA is once again participating in the annual radio Homelessness Marathon on the nights of Feburary 23 and 24. This national event seeks to raise the level of consciousness about the problem of homelessness in the U.S. Each year, the broadcast originates from a different location; this year, that location is Kansas City, Missouri, at community radio station KKFI. The Marathon's goal is not fundraising. It's only purpose is to increase awareness.
Here in Portsmouth, we are going to try something new this year. With WSCA's new ability to broadcast from remote locations, we are going to set up somewhere downtown, with a tent, possibly coffee, and an intrepid crew, to bring that level of awareness closer to home. The details of our local Marathon are still being worked out, but we expect to make a far greater impact than we have in the past. If you would like to participate or to get more information, contact Deirdre Hebert at dhebert@wscafm.org. |

If you have a burning desire to be part of an Audio Theatre Players group and perform classic and contemporary radio plays, now is your chance to become a radio star!
John Lovering, host of WSCA Audio Theatre (Tuesdays 6-8 PM) would like to hear from you. We are in need of actors, writers, keyboard musicians, sound effects people, and a sound engineer or two (people who can operate a mixing board during a live or recorded performance). If you have no experience in radio acting or creating manual sound effects for a radio production, we will gladly train you. Send an email with your contact information and area(s) of interest to jlovering@wscafm.org and you will be taking the first step to what can best be described as "a lot of fun!" |

Upgrades - Additions - Improvements - Repairs - Oh My! - from Gordon Sharpless
Thank you to the following individuals and companies for the very important work they have done during the past month. Their efforts are very much appreciated.
Our Systems Administrator, Steve Diamond, recently replaced an old PC with a newer unit to ensure system functionality and stability. The installation of software updates and tweaking of multiple computers so that they will work well together is a never-ending job. (Photo: John Lovering)
Jim Holway and his team from Holway Electric (603-964-8888) of Rye very generously donated and installed a new 8 Kilowatt back-up generator. (Photo:Ann Haggart)

The installation of the gas line that will fuel our new generator was graciously donated by Lamprey Brothers of North Hampton (603-964-6703). (Photo: Tim Stone)
Portsmouth Community Radio owes a huge debt of gratitude to Holway Electric and Lamprey Brothers. This new generator is an extremely important upgrade that will enable us to continue to serve the community in the event of an extended power outage.

Brian (in photo) and Jorge of Portsmouth Quality Flooring (603-436-3422) donated their expert repair of the floor in our main broadcast studio. The installed tiles contain a carbon mixture and can be grounded to remove unwanted static discharge that can damage sensitive electronic equipment. (Photo: Gordon Sharpless)
Recently, in preparation for moving an important equipment rack to a more accessible location, station engineer Richard Fitzpatrick has been hard at work drawing up a very detailed wiring diagram and signal flow chart that will make future repairs and modifications much easier.

Rocking in 2011
WSCA DJs Broadcast from Market Square

Rocky Smith, Jean Proulx, Jenny Freeman, Kevin Caron, Cindy Bistoury
Thousands flooded Portsmouth for a relatively balmy First Night, making for a busy scene in front of the WSCA DJ Booth on the corner of Market and Pleasant.
At the strike of the 5:00 p.m. North Church clock chime, Rocky Smith made the last connection for the PA system and the music filled Market Square. Tim Stone took the first shift from 5-7:30 and entertained the crowd of mostly parents and their children, some of whom "got down" break dancing on the wet pavement. Rocky took over at 6:30. When they're in the studio, the DJs never get to see their audiences. One of the fun things for DJs about providing the music for First Night is the opportunity it gives them to see their fans up close and having a great time. It was hard to tell who was having more fun or doing more dancing, the DJs playing the music or the crowd dancing in the street.
Buster Poindexter's "Hot Hot Hot" got everyone moving. More...
The above article was compiled from the notes of Jean Proulx, Jenny Freeman, Tim Stone, and Kevin Caron. |

Radio Activity
Listeners and friends of Portsmouth Community Radio, take note: Every couple of years, it seems, a vocal minority in Congress calls for slashing government support of public and community broadcasting, and they're at it again.
In response, America's public and community television and radio stations have come together to launch a project called "170 Million Americans for Public Broadcasting," a way of creating a network of local rallying points for members, listeners, viewers and others who value public and community broadcasting. At the heart of this initiative is the website www.170millionamericans.org, which you're invited to visit if you'd like to support this effort. |

Comments About Localism and Radio
From August 1, 2010 RadioWorld Magazine
Responding to a Ford official interviewed by RadioWorld: "I completely agree with (Julius) Marchwicki's point that in-car internet radio is not the 'death' of terrestrial radio. In fact just the opposite, in-car internet radio can only contribute to the growing success of local radio broadcasters."
About a news item, "National Association of Broadcasters Calls for 'Modest' Ownership Reform": "The only thing that will save radio is if it gets back in the hands of local, creative, caring people. More consolidation will just hasten radio's death spiral."
