"Thank You" seems inadequate to convey our gratitude for the outpouring of support that we received during our Pledge Drive. |

Dear Friends,
Thanksgiving is an appropriate time to publish our first edition of Tidings because it allows us the opportunity to thank everyone who has supported Portsmouth Community Radio.
Without you, our dedicated volunteers, members, and Underwriters, we would not exist, so it is with a very deep sense of gratitude that we say "thank you" for all that you do to make Portsmouth Community Radio possible.
Happy Thanksgiving from Portsmouth Community Radio!

What's Happening Fall Pledge Drive Reflects Outstanding Support
The "best pledge drive we have ever had!" is the way Jean Proulx reported the results of the October 22nd-29th eight-day event. A huge debt of gratitude goes out to all the DJs, hosts, and phone volunteers for the many hours of work they contributed to the success of this fund drive.
A special "thank you" to Shawn Henderson, host of Stay Tuned, who organized the Deely Stan Concert at the Elks Lodge on October 22nd and to those who sold and purchased the tickets for this kick off event of the fund drive.
We also want to thank the businesses who provided in-kind support with our mailing costs and for providing food and coffee for our many DJs and volunteers. The overall effort was outstanding and the results were remarkable.
The goal of our drive was $20,000 and as of this issue of Tidings we have met that goal and then some. Donations are still coming in and when we add in the in-kind donations of equipment and services to the station, we have a grand total of $27,000. In an expression of our community commitment, we delivered a check for $300 to Diane Giese, Executive Director of the Seacoast Family Food Pantry, the amount representing about one dollar for every individual donation made during our Fall Pledge Drive.
Also, a reminder that Portsmouth Community Radio will be out and about and personally thanking the Seacoast community by participating in the December 4th Holiday Parade in Portsmouth. Look for the WSCA nautical theme float. Word has it that it might even be an actual boat...Ahoy!
We not only thank the Seacoast community for their donations, but also for the sense of validation that your support provided for those of us who volunteer at the station. You made us feel as if we truly are an integral part of the community.
If you have not donated to the Pledge Drive and would like to do so, simply click on the Quick Link to the left that says "Become a Member" and you will be directed to donate to the "Seacoast Arts and Cultural Alliance", which is our official 501C3 non-profit name.

New On The Air Angelynne Hinson to host Morning Voices
Angelynne Hinson (ahinson@wscafm.org) , former co-host of Classical Combinations, will be hosting a new weekly Friday drive-time program Morning Voices, 6-9 AM beginning November 26th.
Morning Voices will feature an eclectic mix of vocal music, new and familiar, classical and standard, with some instrumental music thrown in just for fun. The show will also include cultural news and interviews, weekly composer/lyricist features, and previews of upcoming cultural events.
On the air at WSCA for three years, Angelynne has hosted Classical Combinations, co-produced OperaWorks Radio and produced for Second Sunday, a monthly feature that airs during the time of OperaWorks Radio.
While an undergraduate at Harvard University, Angelynne pursued an academic interest in the development of American music and theatre. Ann Haggart brings Radiogazette to WSCA
Ann Haggart (ahaggart@wscafm.org) is the host of an exciting new show called Radiogazette which airs on Fridays 9-9:30 AM It premiered on November 19th.
Generally the show will follow a newspaper theme and will feature various "columnists" covering a wide variety of interesting topics such as wine, the latest tech gadgets, and energy use and conservation.
An interview segment called "NH Political Theater" and an update on news, weather, local events and entertainment will round out the program.
Ann tells us that seasonal themes will be the focus of some programs, particularly at this time of year. |

Board News Daniel Schwarz Joins Board of Trustees
At the November 9th meeting, Daniel P. Schwarz, Esq. was appointed to the Portsmouth Community Radio Board of Trustees. Mr. Schwarz brings with him an extensive background working with non-profit organizations, among them Families First, and is currently Chair of the Board of Trustees for the Friends of the Music Hall. Through his prior Board experience, he also brings a special perspective that will be helpful to Portsmouth Community Radio's Board.
Mr. Schwarz graduated from Northwestern University, later worked in the newspaper industry, and then attended law school at Boston University, graduating in 1985. He is a member of both the New Hampshire and Maine Bars. He received his legal training at Sheehan, Phinney Bass and Green and then formed Flygare Schwarz & Closson with Tom Flygare and Tom Closson. This past May the firm merged with Jackson Lewis, a national law firm that represents management exclusively related to labor and employment issues.
In addition to his work at Families First and the Music Hall, Daniel has been volunteering as the Assistant Umpire-in-Chief for the Portsmouth Little League since 1997.
We all welcome Daniel to our Board of Trustees and look forward to working with him as the station continues to grow and move forward.

Please Welcome
New Volunteers at Portsmouth Community Radio
Adam Baer, who lives in Dover, is our new volunteer Social Media Manager.
Adam grew up in the central Maine town of Dexter and graduated from the University of Maine with a degree in Journalism. While at UMaine, Adam hosted The Right On a radio show that highlighted the Funk, Soul, as well as R&B music of the '60s.
See our Quick Links section to check out Adam's work on Facebook and Twitter!
Jasper Salach has worked in social services all his life. He believes in giving back to the community through service. He recently worked as a case manager in a self-sufficiency program which was focused on helping individuals adn families move forward during the economic down turn.
Currently, Jasper co-hosts with Dee Hebert on Pagan FM (Thursdays 10 PM-2 AM), but he has plans to develop a show that will focus on social services in our local communities, with a self-help concept and music that lifts the spirit, with some metaphysical overtones.

Three Volunteers Receive Special Recognition
At a recent station meeting, our Volunteer Coordinator Jean Proulx, announced the recognition of three volunteers for their outstanding contributions to Portsmouth Community Radio.
Terry Blake and his daughter, Sarai, who are the DJs on Fan Talk (Saturdays 8-10 PM) were recognized for their energy and commitment to not only the scope and quality of their program but also for their tireless efforts with fundraisers and other station events.
Terry has recently become the interim Music Department coordinator, a position which requires an immense amount of time and effort. We think we have the right person for the job.
Ronnie Tomanio was recognized for his contribution to the station through the development and production of Don't Dis' My Ability, a show for and about people living with disabilities and those who love and care for them.
This program targets a segment of the community that is often overlooked and as such represents a true example of what community radio is all about. Don't Dis' My Ability is heard every other Tuesday (4-4:30 PM).

Ronnie's wife, Karen, accepting the recognition on his behalf, read a statement from Ronnie thanking his co-hosts John Ewebanks and Ali Ketcham.

With Gratitude
Two Board Members Stepping Down, Three DJs Leaving
 | | Tim Stone and Bruce Pingree | Portsmouth Community Radio owes a huge debt of gratitude to Tim Stone and Bruce Pingree, both of whom finished their time of service on the station's Board of Trustees at the October 6th Board Meeting.
As most of you know, both Tim and Bruce were "founding fathers" of the station and were Board members from the beginning in June of 2000, when Portsmouth Community Radio was still in its planning stages. Both have committed enormous amounts of time and energy to the station over all these years, both on and off air, with Tim even doing a stint as General Manager (this in addition to his day job!). But while they've moved off the Board, Tim and Bruce will continue to make themselves and their advice available to the station, with Tim continuing to host Mixed Up World, co-hosting The Environmental Show, serving as our Facilities Manager and helping in many, many other ways. Please join me in saying "thank you" to Tim and Bruce.Alan BradyChairPortsmouth Community Radio Board of TrusteesWe thank the following DJs for helping to make our program schedule the most diverse on the Seacoast. We will miss them.
Steve Johnson was the DJ on Mundo Mondays, (6-8 AM) and Brave New Opry heard each Sunday at noon.
Steve's big smile complemented his wonderful sense of humor. He was also known for his willingness to step up and offer a helping hand, many times filling in for DJs on short notice.
Adam Williams, was the DJ on Skeezix Sound System (Sundays 10 PM-Midnight) that featured music of Jamaica. It was a unique, fun reggae show which was one of the first regular weekly shows starting in the Fall of 2004. We will definitely miss Adam and his musical beats.

Sharon Jones, the popular host of Singers Past and Present, (Saturdays 10 AM-Noon), has been a shining star at the station since she first sat down behind our microphone. Unfortunately, Sharon hosted her last show earlier this month.
Sharon is a native of Portsmouth who has been delighting audiences here and beyond with her tremdous energy and great singing style for many years.
As a vocalist, Sharon has traveled extensively with world-renowned jazz organist Johnny Hammond Smith, with saxophonist Houston Person, and others. After touring, she settled in Los Angeles, studying privately with a top vocal coach. It was these early years that shaped Sharon as a stylist and a polished performer.
Sharon's return back home to Portsmouth and sharing of her talents and knowledge of the music and its singers with listeners of Portsmouth Community Radio has been an honor and a privilege for all of us.
Thank you, Sharon, for being part of Portsmouth Community Radio, and know that you will be sorely missed and are always welcome to come back.
Mark Pruett Recognized for Outstanding Service

Mark Pruett, who takes you on a "foray into everything metal" on his show Black Night Meditations (Tuesdays 10 PM-2 AM) was recently presented with the station's "Golden Headphones" award for outstanding service to the station as the acting Program Director.
In addition, the Board of Trustees unanimously thanked Mark for voluntarily assuming the responsibilities of the Program Director for an extended period of time while a full-time Director was sought. |

Volunteers Changing or Adding Roles at WSCA
At the November 9th Board of Trustees meeting, Damon Thomas agreed to take on the responsibilities of Program Director and the Board named him Acting Program Director.
Damon is the host of the very popular show Dead Ahead (Sundays 3-5 PM) that features the music and history of The Grateful Dead.
This past spring, Damon joined the Board of Trustees and has served as the Board's liasion to Programming. In his new role, Damon will be making more valuable contributions to the station than ever.
We all wish Damon well in his new position and thank him for taking on such an important responsibility at Portsmouth Community Radio.

Jenny Freeman, who has been one of the three co-hosts of Portsmouth At Large (Mondays 9-10 AM), has left that show in the very capable hands of Valerie Smith Chriske and Liz Wright. Jenny will continue as the host of Soul Vaccination (alternating Thursdays 6-8 PM), and in addition, she has taken on a new role as our Underwriting Coordinator. She will be responsible for seeking out new, and supporting our current, valuable underwriters.
If you own or know of a business that might be interested in becoming an underwriter for Portsmouth Community Radio, you can contact Jenny Freeman at underwriting@wscafm.org .
Meeting the needs of both the station and the expectations of those businesses who so generously support our efforts through their underwriting of programming is extremely important, and we all thank Jenny for taking on this responsibility. |
