The current field of addiction treatment has been evolving for almost eight decades. During this time, we have seen many important developments in the field as well as many failed experiments. We have incorporated traumas work in most treatment centers, understanding and treating co-existing psychiatric problems has become a professional standard, and we have been experimenting with the role of drug replacement therapy and other psychotropic or biologic support for recovery. The 12 Steps continue to provide a clinical foundation for many treatment centers and for good reason, AA and NA continue to be the most readily available and cost-effective option for the treatment of addiction. Other non-12 Step approaches have also surfaced, providing an alternative to the 12 Step approach to treatment. The verdict is still out on most of these new and innovative approaches. The important thing is that we are exploring the question, "What works best for this patient?" Yet there remains much controversy the best answer this question.

It seems time to step back and conduct a professional inventory of where we have been, where we are now, and where we are heading. To this end we have organized a conference that will feature current and innovative treatment approaches in our field, take head on controversial topics and encourage a professional dialogue about these issues, and offer a retrospective of the field and a forecast about the future by some of the best and brightest in our field.
