Happy spring planting!

Plants for Spring and Beyond

As miserable as last summer was we learned some valuable information as to what plants could take the severe punishment of heat and drought.

Shown at left is cestrum, a bushy perennial that is an absolute knockout plant that can take a beating and still look great.  I had some of these in black plastic containers, full sun, all summer, 107+ degree heat day after day.  Didn't skip a beat.  Flowers bloom non-stop spring through frost and attract butterflies and hummingbirds like crazy.  Highly recommended.

Turk's cap - another winner this past summer.  Since turk's cap is native to East Texas I thought it would probably fare well and it did.  I have some away from the general area where I water and I purposely left those alone... no supplemental water at all and they came through with flying colors (red of course!).  A fabulous hummingbird bush - highly recommended.

Rosemary, bay laurel, basil, lemongrass, thyme, and others also survived the summer.  Supplemental water was given but not on a large scale, so if they can survive and do well through a summer like last one I would definitely say they are worthy of a spot in the garden.  Surprisingly, all my pepper plants did great and continued to produce peppers throughout the summer and up to the first frost.

Heirloom tomato plants and other spring vegetables will be available mid-March until sold out.  For the best selection I would definitely not wait too long... you snooze, you lose, especially as fast as the tomato and pepper plants fly out of here in the spring.

For a listing of all the plants we'll have available once we open mid-March check out the "Plants" page on our website.  Varieties of heirloom tomatoes will be listed as well.

Crockett Garden Club Annual Spring Plant Sale

Friday, March 30th is the date, the "Old Filling Station" one block east of the town square on Goliad Street is the place.  There will be lots of quality spring bedding plants, colorful hanging baskets, and of course herbs, wildflowers, Texas natives and spring vegetable plants from Pineywoods Herb Farm.  10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.

Eggplant! Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds

We carry a good selection of Baker Creek heirloom seed packets, and they are the only seeds we plant in our garden beds.   If you have never explored their website it is worth your time:  www.rareseeds.com.  Take some time to view the pictures and browse their selection of heirloom seeds.  Definitely a treat!   By the way, the picture above looks like beautiful, ripe tomatoes, doesn't it?  Nope... how about eggplant!  That's just one of the great things I love about heirloom seeds.

Final thoughts:

I have had several inquiries from people wanting to buy spring vegetable plants now to plant out in this nice, spring-like weather we are having.  It is my opinion that winter is not done with us quite yet.  We are prone to freezing weather throughout March and early April.  I would be very surprised if we didn't get at least one hard freeze within that time.  I am not planting my tomatoes or other tender spring vegetable plants out until late March or early April as I normally do.  Don't be fooled by Mother Nature!

If you haven't been out to Pineywoods Herb Farm yet we'd love to show you around.  And to those customers and friends who we see often... THANK YOU!  We couldn't do what we do without you.

Every season we have some new plants in the greenhouse area and we introduce a couple of new products in the guest house.  This spring come on out and see what's in store... you'll be glad you did.
