As we near the end of another year I like to reflect on what went right this past year, what could have been better, the good times and the trying times.  What stands out foremost in my mind is the hot, dry summer.  Trying to keep potted plants, herb beds, display beds, shrubs and trees alive was challenging to say the least.  Sometimes I wondered if it was all worthwhile... getting out at 5:00 a.m. to water for several hours until the sun made it impossible to be outside, then doing it again for an hour or so after the sun went down.  Every single day.  But I was determined to keep it up as I kept telling myself that summer and drought conditions don't last forever.

So here we are, close to the end of the year with
cool weather and GREEN GRASS once again!

Perseverance:  continuing to put one foot in front of the other until conditions improve.
Sooner or later they always do.

Our 3rd Annual Christmas Open House

December is special here at Pineywoods Herb Farm.  It is the time I get to show gratitude to my customers and friends for the support and enthusiasm they have shown to me throughout the year.  After all, there wouldn't be a Pineywoods Herb Farm without YOU!

My Christmas Open House is a day of entertainment (see below), lots of good food (on the house!) and sale pricing on items that would make perfect Christmas gifts for someone special.  All plants are 25% off during the month of December, and we have special sale pricing on many items in the guest house as well throughout the month.

Entertainment begins about 1:30 with Brenda Josephsen's Young Violinists playing Christmas carols.  If you've been here the last year or two you know what a treat this is.  I'm always amazed at the talent these youngsters have.  Between 2 and 2:30 we have the very popular Wright Family from here in Kennard who will have you toe-tappin' in no time flat.  They play everything from the mountain dulcimer to guitar, bones, banjo, mandolin and more.  I am so thrilled to have both of these fantastic musical groups here for this special day.  Please plan to join us if you can... you'll be happy you did.

Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds - 25% off in December

We sell Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds exclusively here at Pineywoods Herb Farm.  It is a great family-run operation that is working hard to get the word out and educate people on the importance of heirloom seeds vs. hybridized seeds.

When I sell tomato plants in March and April they range from 18" to 36" tall, beautiful and lush with some already showing buds.  People ask me when I plant the seeds.  "No later than the last day of January" is my answer.  It is very important here in Texas for tomatoes to be setting fruit before we get too hot, and sometimes that can occur as early as the middle of May.  If you wait and plant tomato seeds in March or April it will almost always be too hot for the buds to set fruit properly.

If you want to grow tomatoes from seed yourself (it's easy!) you should buy the seeds early and plant them in peat pots or small pots in January or mid-February at the latest, keeping them in pots until around the first week or two of April when you can then plant them outside.  To help you accomplish this all seed packets are 25% off during the entire month of December and I have peat pots for sale as well.  Everything but the dirt.  Then you'll have the seeds handy after the holidays are over and you can get a jump start in January on your planting.

Luncheons - after December no more until spring

We have just a few openings remaining for December luncheons.  After that we start taking reservations for the spring on March 1st.  If you'd like to join us this month call  or email for availability.  We'd love to have you!

We are open regular hours of Fridays & Saturdays 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m., Sundays noon until 4:00 p.m., and other days by appointment through December 18th.  After that date we are open by appointment only until mid-March.  If you realize in January that you didn't get your Baker Creek seeds in December like I told you to don't panic... just call or email me to let me know when you'd like to get out here to buy them.  Or if you run out of our wonderful all-natural herbal soap... call or email.  Or if you need a gift for a special person in our off-season...  you know what to do.

And although we don't have luncheons here during our off-season we continue to offer catering at your location year 'round.  So call or email for more information.  We'd love to cater your special event with our fresh, delicious and unique herbal fare.

Best wishes for a wonderful Christmas season.

Thank you all for a great 2011, and I look forward to an even better 2012.
