February, 2012  _______________________________________

Greetings!

Last month I invited you to consider some issues that are involved in the proposed amendment that would establish a constitutional definition of marriage. This month I wish to raise a couple further matters for your consideration.  I am doing this to raise awareness of questions that are important to the Catholic Church. It is not my intention to dictate to anyone the way in which they should vote on the issue in November.

I know people who believe that a constitutional amendment that defines marriage as the union of one man and one woman will guarantee a healthy environment for raising children. Frankly, I believe that such an outcome cannot be assured by the proposed amendment.  Many children are raised with one mother and one father but do not live in a healthy and loving environment. Many other children are raised by a single mother or father and receive a healthy, nourishing and loving upbringing. Children need parents who are mature, who love each other and who have the knowledge, the wisdom and the resources to meet their children's many needs. I do believe that a healthy & loving father and mother can generally provide the best upbringing for a child; however, the proposed amendment cannot insure this and is not intended to insure this.

Make A Difference

While recuperating from major surgery at St. Gertrude in Shakopee in August - 2011, I was informed of a new ministry called "Shared Meals Ministry." We were approached if we would like to be the recipients of their generous offer of a hot evening meal three times a week. My first response was quite negative....surely  my husband and I would certainly be able to fend for ourselves! After several more weeks at St. Gertrudes, reality was settng in and I relented and accepted their offer. I returned home and we began enjoying the most delicious meals from some truly generous, giving and excellent cooks from St. Michael. It was then I realized just how weak I still was so Thank you one and all and some of you twice. I hope to join your wonderful ministry when I am well and strong again!! Many, many Thanks!!  And even greater appreciation from my husband!

In early 2009, I was laid off from my job of 14+ years.  I wondered how I could ever compete with the multitude of others in the same position as I was in.  During my job search I used many resources, including the Job Transition Ministry at St. Michael.  After attending the meetings I always felt better.  The meetings included prayer, which helped me realize just how much God loved me and when one door closed another would open.  The meetings helped me heal spiritually and offered positive reinforcement for me to believe in myself.  When the next door opened, I was confident and ready to start anew.

My son a college student is the recipient of cards from the Card Ministry. It is a great to  know that people care and remember him.  The cards and certificates are wonderful and make him smile and feel special when he receives them.   He will never forget the Church of St. Michael!

Thanks much,

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ of St. Michael's,

Greetings and God's graces and joys in this New Year of 2012!  The Franciscan Brothers of Peace (of St. Paul), want to acknowledge and thank you for your great generosity as parish and school communities over the last Thanksgiving and Christmas season and for many years!!  Thank you for the love of God, love of the poor, and the brothers and our ministries you've shown all this time.   Your food items (esp. stuffing!!), many new clothes from the Christmas "Giving Tree" collection, and of course many prayers and other support help sustain us!  Special thanks to Rhonda Zweber, Diane Metcalfe, and Renee and Mike Laughery for their enthusiastic assistance over the years.

God bless you all.

Br. Pio King and all the Franciscan Brothers of Peace

It is a blessing to receive cards from the Card Ministry in the mail while away because it shows me that the parish never forgets about me. It reminds me that Christ is with us wherever we go, giving us guidance and strength.

THANK YOU FOR THE  SEVEN PILLARS OF CATHOLIC SPIRITUALITY CD

I just wanted to say "thank-you" for the  (WONDERFUL!!) CD we received from the Church of St. Michael at  Christmas. I hope most families got one and actually listened to it. I found the speaker to be very entertaining and a great story-teller with very memorable stories. He makes such valid points and so clearly relates his points to every-day life. I honestly have listened to the CD at least 5-6 times as I feel it nudges me to try harder to "be the best version of myself".

One day I was listening in my car and had just picked-up my 15 year old son, Jason from school. The "Problems with the Mass"

were being discussed and the story of the "Mystery Flu" was playing.  I assumed Jason was "tuned-out" since he was not sarcastically asking me "WHAT are we listening to?!"  As the story came to an end, we were asked how we would feel if that had been our only son and nobody wanted to come to the memorial service/celebration being held for him. Was I ever surprised (and pleased!) when Jason said with a very enlightened tone of voice "Oooohhhhh....I get it"!

Thank you for this wonderful gift!
