November, 2011  _______________________________________

Greetings!

I am one of those people who lament and complain when stores put up their Christmas displays in September.  I fear that the earlier we push our celebrations and preparation for Christmas, the less important Christmas itself becomes.  Sometimes it seems to me that Christmas Day can be a "letdown" or a "disappointment" after all the excitement and parties that precede it.  The idea of observing the Season of Christmas, that follows the actual day, is pretty much ignored.  Celebrating the "Twelve Days of Christmas" is definitely a thing of the past (only the song remains).

Having said that, however, I do encourage people to actively prepare for Christmas by the time we hit November.  In December, people are beginning to feel overwhelmed by all the preparations that need to be done,  In November, however, we still have time to think and make some good decisions about how we will observe and celebrate the Feast.

Our Parish Vision

We Would Love Your Feedback!

by Paul Curti

Hi!  My name is Paul Curti and I serve on the Parish Pastoral Council.  Fr. Tom and the Parish Council would value your feedback regarding what our parish can do to better serve God and each other.  Within the next few days, you will receive an e-mail inviting you to take the Church of St. Michael Parish Ministry Survey.  Please take 5-10 minutes to complete this online survey by November 30 so that we can continue to improve our worship, formation and pastoral outreach.  Your input will make a difference...and it will remain anonymous and confidential.

The Parish Vision Diagram shows how our efforts in the areas of worship, formation and pastoral outreach will help the Church of St. Michael to achieve our vision of "actively spreading God's Truth and living our Catholic faith in the world".  Your feedback will help us refine this vision, which will guide our parish in the future.

Thank you for all that you do to make the Church of St. Michael a vibrant, spirit-filled community!

Lord God,
 You Alone Are The Source
Of Every Good Gift
By Joe Meurer

Lord God, You alone are the source of every good gift.... Does this sound familiar?  Yes it is the prayer that we as a parish prayed every week during this year's Stewardship campaign.   Starting the weekend of October 1st with a visit from a wise Deacon (Len Fuller) who challenged us to think about what we are to do with all of the gifts that God has blessed us with.  Then followed up by parishioners who told us about how they are responding to God Blessings of time, talent and treasure during the next two weekends!  This year's activities were inspired by the Spirit to help us understand how much God loves us and challenge us to respond to His love.

Debt Free

Dreaming About A Parish With No Debt

By Mike Laughery

Two weeks ago I was reviewing the parish financial reports in preparation for the Parish Finance Council meeting. This meeting is where a group of parish volunteers review the finances of the parish to make sure we are within budget, discuss ideas to improve our finances and to pray for God's guidance as we serve the parish. As I looked at the mortgage balance (the amount of money we owe on our church and school buildings) I noticed we were under $1.8 million in debt. If you divide that amount by the 2,600 households we have as members here at the Church of St. Michael that is only $692 per household. The average household in the United States according to the Kansas City Federal Reserve bank owes $180,000 on their house. When I look at it from that perspective...I get very excited about the progress we are making at paying off our debt. We have come a long ways since June of 2009 when we owed $2.5 Million.  I see this accelerating in the years to come because the Finance Committee has decided to include all interest payments on the mortgage in our operations budget. This means every dollar parishioners contribute to the capital campaign going forward can be devoted to paying off debt.
