September, 2011  _______________________________________

Greetings!

In 1999, the Bishops of the United States issued a document entitled "Blessings of Age."  It was a reflection on the way in which the Church and society should relate to those members who are growing older.  The document begins with the following words of Pope John Paul II: "Arriving at an older age is to be considered a privilege; not simply because not everyone has the good fortune to reach this stage in life, but also, and above all, because this period provides real possibilities for better evaluating the past, for knowing and living more deeply the Paschal Mystery, for becoming an example in the Church for the whole People of God" (Christifideles Laici, 1988).  I would like to share just a few of the important insights to be found in this document.

Brother Pio

 Your Genorosity Inspires Me!

by Mike Laughery

God has truly blessed my family- great wife, four kids, free country, awesome church, good job, full stomach-one look at my belly gives that away.  With those blessings in mind, I ask myself how is my family doing at putting those gifts to work to build the Kingdom of Heaven here on earth. My wife, Renee and I have been committed to the concept of "giving back to God what He has given us" for many years now but we can learn a lot from the generosity of other parishioners. While working here these past two years as your Business Administrator I have seen the immense generosity of the parishioners of the Church of St. Michael.

When I worked in the for profit world (I worked for America's Pork Producers "Pork, the Other White Meat") before serving as your Business Administrator I witnessed much generosity. Now that I work for Church of St. Michael I have gotten to see the immense generosity and compassion this faith community has for its fellow man.

New Parish Council Member

My name is Jim Anderson and I was born in Madison SD. I am number 6 of 9 children. We moved around South Dakota a few times before settling in Pierre, South Dakota where I graduated in 1977. I enlisted in the U.S. Army after graduation and off I went. I am a cradle Catholic and was raised by 2 wonderful parents of very strong faith.

I spent the next 23 years in the U.S. Army. I was an enlisted man for 9 years and an officer for the remaining 14 years. I did my undergraduate work at South Dakota State University and my graduate studies at Cardinal Stritch University out of Wisconsin.

Faith Formation

 "Extraordinary in the Ordinary"

Faith Formation Program

by Helen Kleaver

I love the phrase "Extraordinary in the Ordinary."  I heard this awhile back and this best describes how I see God working in the everyday. It began 20 years ago when I signed up to teach my first faith formation class. Quite ordinary as one child's tuition was free if you were a teacher.  Since then I have grown to love this ministry, the children, the program, and working with Janel. Along the way, I have learned much about my faith and my role as a teacher.  One tradition I started years ago, was making Christmas Angel Ornaments as gifts for my class each year. My sister has a craft business and she makes these angels out of mohair. Again a very ordinary gesture.
