Ring Out the Good News

Summer 2011

_______________________________________

Greetings!

I am aware that there are many rumors floating among Catholics regarding the annulment of a marriage within the Church.  I cannot hope to explain here every element involved in this Church process.  However, I hope that I can clarify some basic issues.  Anyone wishing more information is welcome to contact me or Deacon Dick.

An annulment declares that some element that is essential to a true marriage was lacking at the time that the persons entered into the marriage bond.  Both the Church and the State can grant annulments when something that either considers essential is missing.  The State, for example, will annul a marriage if a person is too young to make such a commitment, or when a person has been pressured into a marriage, or when fraud and deceit are involved.  The Church will annul a marriage that appeared to be a true sacrament, in cases in which something essential to the sacrament is lacking at the time the sacrament was celebrated.  Some examples of this would be a situation in which a person was pressured to enter the marriage or when one of the partners was psychologically unable to make a life-long commitment.

HarryBedard Family Lt.Harry Bedard

Hero Returns Home

By Christi Fletcher, Director of Office & Communications

Jack VonFeldt, parishioner and his family made the emotional journey on June 22nd to receive and ultimately lay to rest their Uncle Harry L. Bedard.

Harry L. Bedard was a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Air Force. He was a Bombardier, B-25. He enlisted in the Army Air Force in 1943.  He was awarded the Air Medal ON March 4, 1945. On April 3, 1945 he was declared MIA after his plane crashed into a swampy area in Cebu City, Philippines. Harry was just 22 years old when he died.

Harry got the Purple Heart because he was killed in action. He also got the air medal because those raids in the jungle were pretty dangerous", said Jack VonFeldt.

After learning that Harry was listed MIA, his mother often met trains returning service men at the Milwaukee Road Railroad Depot in the hopes that Harry would come home.

Volunteer Heart

A Heart of a Volunteer

By Kathy Poepping, Pastoral Care Minister

To quote Alex Baldwin, who played the role of  Colonel James Doolittle in the movie Pearl Harbor... "there's nothing quite like the heart of a true volunteer".  I remember the first time I heard that line (as I have to admit, I've seen the movie many times), and as a tear ran slowly down my cheek, I wondered "why, of the many emotionally moving scenes in this movie, was it this simple phrase that made me react so passionately"?  And then it struck me, like Jesus Christ, there is no greater gift of love then to give of one's self for another.

In the past 6 months as my role as Pastoral Care Minister, here at St. Michael's, I've not only been charged with a variety of exciting and challenging job duties and responsibilities, but I've been incredibly blessed with meeting and working with the heart and passion of our volunteers through the various ministry work being done in our community.  A good friend, and yes a volunteer, once quoted Lewis Caroll..."One of the deep secrets of life is that all that is really worth doing is what we do for others."  Another phrase that "moved" me.

Spotlight on Fabian Yaklin

New Parish Council Member

By Fabian Yaklin, Parish Council Member

My name is Fabian Yaklin, and I am excited and grateful to be a new member of the Parish Council at the Church of St. Michael. My wife, Mary Kay, and I just celebrated our fifth anniversary this month and have been blessed with two children, Grace and Nathan.  I was blessed to be raised in a very faith-filled Catholic home along with ten siblings. Mary Kay and I are enjoying the challenges and the great blessings of parenthood. The four of us just returned from a great vacation out in the Badlands, Custer State Park, and the Rocky Mountains. We always enjoy camping and spending time together in the beauty of God's Creation.
