Ring Out the Good News                                      June 2011

_______________________________________

Greetings!

I have often been asked to try to explain what Christians can (and cannot) do if they wish to keep the Sabbath Day holy.  Most people understand the importance of worship but they are often confused about the kind of work that is permitted and the kind of work that would "break" the Sabbath.  On the parish website I tried to address this issue when it was raised as a "Question of the Week."  Now I would like to share some of my thoughts within our parish e-newsletter.

Beyond the Yellow Ribbon:
Supporting Our Military & Their Families
Military Support Group

"As a Naval Officer and pilot during the Vietnam era, I have had the very great pleasure of watching the growth of a ministry at our church that has exceeded all my original prayers and expectations." -Deacon Dick Roy

By Denise Kadrlik, Parishioner

When asked to write an article talking about the history of the military ministry here at St. Michael, it was rather easy to talk about John and Mary Hamre and the group that got us all started. But to describe the passion and willingness to serve whatever may need to be done is another story.

We are close to 70 members strong and are working on our 501C3 (nonprofit) status as well as formal recognition from our governor as a Beyond the Yellow Ribbon organization which requires completion of an extensive action item list. We have members from many religions and numerous different businesses have stepped up to support us.

Door-to-Door Evangelization

By Val Zweber, Parishioner
Evangelization Initiative

"At the end of our route I think we all learned something as a family. Do not be afraid to live out your faith."

When I heard that our Church was going to be organizing an evangelization effort, my first thought was probably like most of you. I envisioned those churches that have sent members to my door in the past. I know how I reacted. Catholics don't actually do this, do we?

Then Mike Laughery, my friend and neighbor, asked me to be part of this effort and I said to myself, "ARE YOU NUTS!" I tend to be very private and conservative, so this was way out of my comfort zone. After a few more requests from Mike, I finally gave in. He's very persistent. Little did I know that my two high school aged daughters had also signed up to participate.
