Ring Out the Good News                                      May 2011

_______________________________________

Greetings!

I have often wondered how May came to be a special month dedicated to Mary.  The great feasts of Mary fall at other times within the year. The Feast of Mary, Mother of God, falls on January 1.  The Feast of the Annunciation falls on March 25.  The Feast of the Assumption falls on August 15.  The Immaculate Conception falls on December 8.  The only feast of Mary in May is the Feast of the Visitation, on May 31, and that is a rather recent change to the liturgical calendar.

I decided to do some investigation.

"Jesus is the Most Important Gift"
Children Look Forward to First Holy Communion

"When I receive

First Communion, Jesus will be in my heart."

-Isabella B.

Over 190 children will receive their First Holy Communion at St. Michael this spring. Most of them will receive at Masses on April 30, May 7, and May 8. Here some of them share from their hearts about Jesus, First Communion family traditions, and what they find most exciting about this occasion.

What was the most important thing you learned about Jesus in class this year?

"He doesn't care what you look like, He loves you no matter what." -Lauren S.

"Jesus eats with people who do bad things to make them better people." -Shane A.

Teresa

"When we first met Teresa she said she would pray for us from Heaven. Now she prays as she hugs her daughters and keeps them close to her."

"Commit your way to the Lord. Trust in Him and He will act" (Psalm 37:5). These words have been my guide and my light as the medical missions to our Sister Parish in Chimbote, Peru, have brought comfort and friendship to the poor.

There have been three, one-week long medical missions in the past three years. Over 3500 patients have been triaged and treated each trip. When the medical missions began it was unclear how much could be accomplished. The needs of the people in Chimbote, however, were very clear. The injustice of having to live in unsanitary conditions, having poor nutrition, and being unable to receive medical attention when needed is heartbreaking. The medical volunteers have seen this injustice and responded to it by giving hope to those who felt abandoned.
