Health Awareness Tip
Did you know that heat-related deaths and illness are preventable yet annually many people succumb to extreme heat? Historically, from 1979-2003, excessive heat exposure caused 8,015 deaths in the United States. During this period, more people in this country died from extreme heat than from hurricanes, lightning, tornadoes, floods, and earthquakes combined. In 2001, 300 deaths were caused by excessive heat exposure. (courtesy of the University of Maryland Medical Center)

SOME TIPS ON HOW TO PREVENT HEAT STROKE:

The "dog days" of summer are here and with the intense heat indexes scattered throughout the country, we want to make sure you are brushed up on these tips for avoiding heat stroke. Don't wait until it creeps up on you!

  • Stay in cool or air conditioned spaces when possible on hot days.
  • Drink more fluids than usual. Drinking enough fluids during exercise, for example, helps improve heart function, maintain kidney function, and lower the body's core temperature. Dehydration can stress the heart and reduce the kidneys' ability to maintain the correct balance of electrolytes (charged elements -- such as potassium, sodium, phosphorous, and chloride -- which are essential for the normal function of every cell in the body).
  • Check on those vulnerable to heat exhaustion (the elderly, for example).
  • Avoid alcohol. Drink water or sports drinks sweetened with natural juices.
  • Exercise or work outdoors during cooler times of day.
  • Drink 2 cups of water 30 minutes before exercising and drink 1 cup of water every 20 minutes.
  • Take cool baths.
  • Wear loose, lightweight clothing.

"Chris"

to July 5, 2011

CHRISTINA E. RUTHERFORD, better known to the contract industry as "Chris" went HOME on July 5, 2011 after a long sickness. Please join us in honoring Chris' memory by celebrating her zest for life and all the contributions she made to the engineering industry with her gifts and talents in the drafting and design arena. Chris was one of the most talented designers in the industrial and marine industry and she has worked along some of the best. Anyone that knew Chris embraced her as one of the most loyal and dedicated on the job and everyone that knew her called her "friend". She truly was one of the most "giving" in all areas of her life. We have lost a friend and a great employee but GOD truly gained an angel. You will be sadly missed dear friend, but we will continue to honor your memory, Chris!

Got an Interview? Try these tips...

Seven Things to Know About the Employer Before an Interview

1. Get general information about your potential employer. You can use the internet to research the business operations of the organization that you want to work with by looking at their recent articles posted on the press or their annual reports. You can also find information about the businesses that they compete with and with this information; you will cause your interviewer to have a feeling of admiration and respect for you.

2. Find information about the businesses that offer stiff competition to the organization you want to work with so that you will display this information in your job interview. You can get information about competitors by researching the companies that sell similar goods or services to the company you want to work with. Having this information will be impressive especially if your interviewer is a manager.

3. Find adequate information about the job you want to get. You can do this by getting detailed information about the specifications of the job from other employees working for the organization. For example, you can ask an employee working for the human resources department about the vacancy and its relationship with other jobs in the organization. You can also get such information from people who work in the field that you want to pursue and find out about what interviewers want job seekers to have when interviewing for such positions.

4. Find information about the values and ideas that the employees of the organization you want to work for regard highly. For example, they may regard values such as entrepreneurship and consensus highly and this can influence the organization to hire different types of people. It will be good for you to talk to other people and find out about these values before your interview date.

5. Get information about the employees who work for the organization you want to apply for a job at and find out the kind of people who do well in the organization. You can do this by using your network of friends to find information about the people who work for the company and you can get information that will help you pass your interview.

6. Find information about the current challenges facing the organization you want to work for from employees. You can have your friends refer you to people who work at the company and then get this information. It will help you ask and answer interview question efficiently and impress your interviewer.

7. Get some information about your interviewer by searching for the person's name on websites such as Facebook or Linked In. You can also ask other people if they know about the person. Most interviewers will be impressed if you know something about them.

Survey Shows What Employers Are Doing to Reduce Health Care Costs

Big surprise-health care costs are going up. In our recent survey, 56% reported annual costs per employee in the $5,000-10,000 range (compared to 47% in last year's survey), and 18% reported costs of over $10,000 per year (compared to 12 % in last year's survey). Stephen D. Bruce, PHR Editor, HR Daily Advisor

Eighty-four percent of responding companies reported taking at least one action to reduce healthcare costs in the prior year, and two-thirds plan further cost control in the coming year. The most popular cost control steps include:

Raising employees' portion of healthcare premiums

 Raising employees' copayments and deductibles

Offering health savings accounts (HSAs) and/or health reimbursement accounts (HRAs)

 Implementing wellness programs

The survey, conducted by HR Daily Advisor in May, 2011, received 338 responses. Respondents were primarily HR managers, from a mix of industries, with over half from manufacturing and construction. Respondents were geographically spread across the US, with about three-quarters of respondents employing 499 or fewer.

Fireworks

Let Freedom Ring!!

We Americans celebrate Independence Day on the 4th of July. As I was watching fireworks last week and enjoying all the freedoms we celebrate here in this great country, I thought about our personal freedom as individuals and the ability we have to make our own choices. We are blessed to be able to make decisions that shape our lives and families due to our men and women who serve this great country. Some of us need to declare our independence in certain areas of our personal life as well. What are some areas that you need to be free from? Could it be fear, a toxic relationship, always trying to please someone, or just learning to say NO? You have to start living your life for You! Think about this today and take your independence and enjoy the freedom God meant for you to live!!! You are the only one that can make it happen. Be that "Firework" that Katy Perry sings about...."Cause baby you're a firework, Come on, show 'em what you're worth!" For information about Life Coaching see www.signaturelives.com.
