As a young child Tricia Lordan had limited mobility in her right arm after heart surgery, but that never stopped her from trying new things. Since that time she has ambitiously taken on many tough challenges, the most recent is sewing class.
"I have learned sewing techniques," she said, "and I can sew with only one hand. I've also learned to use patterns to make outfits. I really enjoy this class because my friends are here and I have gotten to know a lot of other people." Then Lordon exclaimed with excitement, "I achieved one of my goals by passing the sewing test and now I get to take home a sewing machine for my own personal use!"
Class instructor, Bonnie Mahan, started the sewing class in 2010 with four students who were interested in learning to sew alterations for a little extra income. Since that time the program has grown to four classes with approximately seven students attending each lesson. During class Mahan taught the students that their attitude is very important when working together as a team. She commented, "Many of my students have disabilities that make it much, more difficult for them to do an ordinary task. Through this class they realize that God has given them the potential to accomplish whatever they put their mind to and I am greatly blessed to be working with them."
In each class session the students learn to believe in their individual talents, have persistence, be respectful of others and most of all . . . have fun! Brendan Hale hopes someday to earn money by doing alterations for people but until then he comes to class because, "I like that we're all together similar to a family. I have learned patience and how to follow instructions - it makes makes me feel independent."
Both Crystal Gray and Eddie Santiago are working hard to earn their sewing certification and one day they hope to bring home one of the used sewing machines. Gray dreams of finding a job using her new skills while Santiago will be creating household items for his apartment and will act as a tailor for himself and close friends. By committing the time to develop their talents, it is inevitable that these students are inspired to open the door to new opportunities.
To get involved in the sewing program please contact our sewing instructor, Bonnie Mahan by emailing admin@lazarushouse.org. Used sewing machines are always needed as well as donations for the 'sewing kit' that each student receives when entering the class.
