for new programs and facility improvements. Campaign for Dignity Chairperson, Al Torrisi commented, "Right here in our community there are many people who lack what they need to be happy, healthy, productive and contributing members of our community. Through this Capital Campaign we hope to bring new and better ways to help these people help themselves; give them the knowledge and skills they need and help to restore a sense of dignity that is essential to making a new life for themselves and their families."
To respond to the growing needs in Lawrence and the surrounding communities the objectives of the campaign will: expand the education and work preparation programs; create more housing; implement an 'Asset Building through Financial Literacy Program; invest in building safety and energy improvements for the facilities; establish a stabilization fund; and, enhance efficacy of life-saving core services including food, shelter, clothing and health services.

At the event, guest speaker Michelle shared a heartwarming story about her struggle and ultimate success after unexpectedly finding herself a single mother trying to support very young children. Not having many alternatives she found herself in an already crowded apartment with her mother and sister's family. Michelle clarified, "My sister and her children shared their bedroom with me and my three girls, but we barely got any sleep with the four of us dividing a bed. Every night it broke my heart to see my little girls in that situation."
With a recommendation from her mother she arrived at Lazarus House hoping to study and prepare for her GED testing and find a job. Seeing her dedication to her studies she was asked to be a student in the new Culinary Training Program by her teacher, Ann Shields. "Seizing the opportunity," Michelle explained, "I cannot miss out on this because it's something that I love to do. So I went ahead and joined the training, met different chefs and learned how to prepare many dishes. I was so excited and happy to be able to be a part of this program."
After her internship at the Irish Cottage, Michelle was hired to work full time to prep food, wash dishes, and set up the salad bar. Now, less than a year later, she has been promoted three times and is a line cook and helps at the special food shows. She adds, "I am so grateful that I actually have a job that I love. I live in my own apartment and as a single mom of three I am able to make a living and support my family. My girls look up to me and they are proud of their mother!"
Michelle concluded, "I want to thank Lazarus House, and all the people who support these programs - for both their help and for believing in me! But, there are so many more people that are in similar situations like I was in or even worse! Now they will also have a chance to get the help or push needed to accomplish their dreams!
Executive Director, Bridget Shaheen remarked about Michelle, "She is a wonderful example of how we - you and Lazarus House together - can make a difference in the lives of an individual and her family. But there are so many more success stories to be written and the Campaign for Dignity will help us to start those people on the journey out of poverty. Through the generosity of our Board of Directors, corporations and foundations and a few individuals we have already reached 60% of our $5 Million goal. I hope you will be inspired to join the many others who are doing so, by making a pledge or gift to the Campaign for Dignity. I thank you for all that you do!"
The Campaign for Dignity will ensure that people in dire need are provided with the basic necessities and then empowered through education and work preparation to transform their lives forever.
