The Power of One
One step must start each journey; One word starts a prayer; One hope will raise your spirits; One touch can show you care.
One voice can speak with wisdom; One heart can know what's true; One life can make the difference; It's up to you! ~ Author Unknown
When Therese Leone joined the Lazarus House Advisory Board she jumped into action by serving on the three major event committees; the Golf Tournament, Hike for Hope, and Sharing our Bounty dinner. Bridget Sheehy, Event Manager, shared, "Therese works in the banking industry and is able to introduce us to her many connections to donate auction items for the golf tournament and Sharing our Bounty dinner. Before the Hike for Hope walk she collected money with the Enterprise Bank team and even encouraged the staff to volunteer on the day of the event. I often see Therese around town, she is a natural networker and dedicated to helping our organization. Although very busy she always makes time for Lazarus House."
Therese has been aware of the work that Lazarus House has been doing in the community from the start when it was a five-bed emergency shelter. Since that time she has been impressed with its growth and diversity of services. However, with a soup kitchen, three thrift stores, food pantry and four housing facilities, Capernaum Place remains a favorite. Therese describes the transitional housing service as an "essential part of the programs, that allows the residents time and space to create a fresh beginning. The staff at Capernaum Place encourages the guests and through workshops guides them in a new, positive direction." Therese likes the fact that Lazarus House doesn't just look at solving issues concerning homelessness and hunger, but also focuses on every aspect of the residents life so that they can begin to take the steps to permanently move away from poverty.
Through her enthusiasm and boundless energy she recruited a Enterprise Bank team, where she works during the day as Branch Relationship Manager, to volunteer not only at the Hike for Hope, but also once a month they help out at the food pantry. Her office also initiated a diaper drive which extended to other bank branches in the area. Her next goal is to hold a food drive.
Her influence at the bank and in the community hasn't gone unnoticed. She has become an inspiration for people who believe one person can accomplish anything. When asked who inspires her, Therese responded, "The people who donate their time and money to help others are the ones that inspire me . . . . with their big hearts, open arms, and endless love."

Walking brings undershanding
Ariana Bishop is a 15-year old student at Andover High school who has walked in the Hike for Hope for the last eight years as part of Team Popsicle. She writes a monthly column to help inspire people to walk and fundraise.

When I started walking in the Hike for Hope eight years ago I didn't know much about Lazarus House and Capernaum Place hadn't event been built yet. I was in the third grade when a good friend of mine, Elena, asked if I would be interested in walking five miles on a Sunday afternoon to raise money for a homeless shelter. I had never done anything like this and to be honest, five miles seemed like a lot. But the majority of my friends were going to walk, so I decided to join them.
When I arrived at Merrimack college, where the Hike begins each year, many of my neighbors and friends were huddled together, getting ready for the walk and taking pictures. There was music and balloons, clowns and a woman on stage giving aerobics lessons. Everything seemed so exciting. I had so much fun walking with my friends, as well as, afterwards, when we had our faces painted and enjoyed a barbecue lunch together.
A few years after my first Hike for Hope experience my reason for walking changed. It was pouring rain and I wore a thin jacket that was too small for me; I was miserable! All I wanted to do was go home and change into warm clothes. But I soon felt guilty for feeling this way when I heard someone mention that people living on the streets don't have a home to escape the rain from; they don't have warm, dry clothes to change into. Suddenly the five miles and the poor weather didn't seem as bad. At that moment, I realized why so many people were willing to sacrifice an afternoon and walk five miles in the rain or sunshine.
As the years passed, the number of people participating in the Hike increased, as well as the donations. In 2007, Capernaum Place was built with the money raised from the past seven Hike for Hope walks. I had my first tour of Capernaum Place and I was amazed and proud that I helped make this happen. The Hike for Hope has become a huge part of my life over the years. Meeting people who have lived at Capernaum Place, hearing their stories of success and seeing the impact of the money raised from the Hike has changed my life. I urge everyone to get involved in this walk that supports programs to help transform people's lives.

"Fun"draising Tip
by Sue Hurley
Make up business cards with your online donation webpage URL included. You can make the cards yourself on your computer. This is an easy way to let others know what you are fundraising for and how easy it is to donate online. Make your card creative and fun perhaps add a message on it such as " A Hug for a Donation!" or "This card can be known to jump back out of the trash and kiss you if you make a donation." Simple is best - carry them everywhere and pass them on.
