If it wasn't for the people who donate food I wouldn't be eating

"When I was young I was in Boy Scouts and we ran canned food drives at Thanksgiving and Christmas - that's how I knew about Lazarus House. I have no income now. I am 52 years old and for 14 years I was a full time roofer, now they only want to hire the young guys. I don't come to the Food Pantry often because other people need it more than me; I live day by day. If it wasn't for the people who donate food to Lazarus House I wouldn't be eating. Thank God for them!"

Richard

"I drove a fork lift but had a stroke. I lost my house and I'm on Social Security now. The money doesn't go far, most of it goes to rent my room at the YMCA.  It's too expensive to eat prepared food so I come to the food pantry and it helps me save on my expenses. I would not have enough money to pay everything and buy food without the Pantry. I am very glad to the people who donate food."

Gustavo

"I get food stamps but I give half of them to a friend who needs it more - she has kids. I went to her house for some food, but she didn't have anything; that's why I am here. She won't come to the food pantry because she is embarrassed and I will give her most of the groceries I get so the kids won't be hungry. Today I went to another food pantry, but they ran out of food before I made it to the front of the line . . . I rushed here hoping there would still be something left and there was. To all the people who bring groceries to Lazarus House, thank you very much for donating!"

Job loss sends family to Food Pantry

Ken Campbell, Food Coordinator of Lazarus House Food Pantry, received a call from a woman requesting food assistance. After explaining that her husband had been laid off from his job of nine years, the unemployment had run out and her hours had been reduced to 10 hours a week, she became very emotional and began to cry. The repairs needed on their car could not be done because they did not have the money. This meant that her husband had to take a bus or a taxi to find work. She shared that this was the first time her family had to go to a food pantry and wanted to know what she had to do to qualify to receive food.

She was told that Lazarus House does not require any qualification to receive food and to come to the food pantry on Wednesday. For two months her family came to the Food Pantry for food and then stopped coming. One day her husband stopped by, he explained that he had recently started working again and the job was on a bus route. He was carrying a bag of groceries that he wanted to donate and went on to explain that his family didn't know what they would have done without the food that they received!

Summer time is difficult for the Food Pantry, donations are down and with the children out of school the needs are up! Please help if you can with non-perishable food items such as: Pasta packaged & cans, Mac & Cheese, Canned Soup & Vegetables, Canned Tuna & Chicken, Canned Beans, Rice Packaged, Peanut Butter or any other non-perishable food. Visit our website at www.lazarushouse.org  or call Ken Campbell, Food Coordinator (978) 269-5208 to find out how you can help.
