Trampolines: Be safe and smart
trampolineIn 2003, medical professionals treated 211,646 trampoline injuries. The medical, legal and insurance costs were estimated at $4 billion. Almost half the injuries were in children 5-10 years old and 11 deaths were reported between the years 1990-1999. There are more than 3 million trampolines in private and school use, and the number continues to increase. Because of the danger of injury, the American Academy of Pediatrics highly recommends professional supervision during trampoline use.

Trampoline owners should be aware of the potential legal issues involved with ownership, as there are an estimated $178 million in liability lawsuits associated with trampoline injuries. Owners should check their homeowner's insurance to make sure they are covered in the case of an injury or lawsuit. Some policies require an additional premium ($200-$500 per year) to cover home trampolines.

Recommendations
Many trampoline injuries occur when more than one person is on the trampoline at the same time. If two are on the trampoline, the lighter weight participant is at particular risk. Although many parents educate children on the use of helmets and safe bicycling practices, many parents do not teach safe practices regarding trampoline use.

The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons recommends the following:
1. Required adult supervision
2. Only one participant on the trampoline at a time
3. Trampolines are not recommended for children under 6 years of age
4. Trampolines should be at ground level
5. Acrobatics should be left to those with professional training
6. Shock absorbing materials should be placed around the springs and hard surfaces
7. Nets are recommended

Conclusion
Trampoline use is increasing in the United States. Concern has been raised regarding the potential for serious spine injuries including death. The decision to own a trampoline should include an assessment of legal liability issues as well as supervision of children during use. Homeowner's policies should be checked so owners are covered in the event of an accident.

Have a safe and happy summer!

Dr. Matthew Mitchell, M.D.,
Casper Orthopaedics Associates
New Physical Therapy Program at COA
PostureNancy Robertson, Physical Therapist and ATC, has 18 years of experience in outpatient rehabilitation and retraining athletes of all abilities, which facilitates a quick return to their previous sports activities.

Based on new research by Ron Hruska, PT, Nancy has developed a new program for Casper Orthopaedics, which assesses the body as a whole--focusing on muscle strength and function--to detect imbalances which can add stress to joints and lead to pain patterns in the patient. This is an advanced program with excellent results for patients suffering from certain types of joint pain, lower extremity pain, and injuries caused by engaging in sports or physical activities.

After Nancy discovers the muscle imbalances causing the pain, she can design an exercise-based home program for the patient--including stretching and strengthening--to correct the imbalance and restore the body to its natural rhythms.

If you are suffering from joint pain, not related to arthritis, or a sports injury that won't heal, please contact Casper Orthopaedics to get a postural assessment from Nancy.
