Xande Ribeiro Seminar
2x Absolute World Champion and World-Class Coach
Brought to Portland by Five Rings Jiu Jitsu and Seaside BJJ
|
|
Greetings!
Holy cow ... typically August is a relatively slow months for Jiu Jitsu academies. Well, that wasn't the case at Five Rings. Three tournaments, a 40 hour kids camp, a major seminar, and class sizes that were impressive. The energy has been powerfully positive and focused ... and folks' games are blowing up.
September is chalked up to be a GREAT month - new class schedule with more classes, curriculum more closely tied to classes which will help athletes learn better, the introduction of the Little Samurai program, and two new affiliate groups will be launching - Five Rings at Sweat 360 in Hillsboro and Five Rings in the Garden Home Rec Center.
If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask ... any and all of our coaches will be glad to answer your questions ... or help you find the answer to it. Enjoy the last few weeks of Oregon's beautiful weather ... and be sure to get your training in as well.
In good health,
Coach Tom

Xande Ribeiro Seminar - Review
| On Saturday, August 27, Five Rings Jiu Jitsu and Seaside BJJ co-hosted Xande Ribeiro in Portland.
It was GREAT to have Xande back in Portland - he was at Five Rings almost a year ago in September of 2010 (See HERE)
Xande focused on the details of good movement and understanding the subtle details of movements, and the importance of being un-beatable.
The seminar caught the attention of GracieMag.com. (See HERE) They posted a report of the co-sponsored event on the Tuesday following the event. Very Cool! !

September - Time of Change, Growth, and Evolution
| September is a time of BIG changes at Five Rings - all in the name of progress and evolution. We are upgrading our belting format from white to blue belt, we are implementing a more comprehensive curriculum for the BJJ 1, BJJ 2, and BJJ 3 classes, and we are expanding our schedule.
However, in all this good growth, we don't want folks to get lost or confused. To prevent that, check out the following article and videos:
1. Belt and Curriculum Evolution
2. Training Philosophy and the Development of a Technical Game
3. What Classes do I Attend?
Check these out, and if you still have questions, come see Coach Tom or Coach Eric right away. We'll help you out.

Little Samurai's (ages 4 - 7) Kick-Off
| Beginning Tuesday, September 6, Five Rings Jiu Jitsu will be running it's Little Samurai Program (for children from 4 - 7 years old).
We are taking our youth programs to the next level! ! ! We've wanted to teach children since the day we opened. However, we know what a big responsibility it is ... it is and how demanding it can be. We needed to get the staff (five coaches and growing) and the systems (life skills and bully proof curriculum) in place to run a world-class program. The time is now.
The Little Samurai's program is built upon the following principles:
- Using "playing" as the vehicle to teach
- Bully Proof concepts
- Life Skills lessons
- The essential movements of Jiu Jitsu
Class times are as follows:
- Monday and Wednesday: 5:20 - 5:50 pm
- Tuesday and Thursday: 4:30 - 5:00 pm
Coach Tom and Coach Eric have over 40 years of collective experience teaching children martial arts. We are excited to bring the Little Samurai program to Five Rings this fall.
Sign up before September 12 and receive a special "pioneer discount"!
Refer a friend, and recieve a $100 visa gift card.

It's More Than Just a Patch
|
I saw the post "It's More Than Just a Patch" on Chris Blanke's Facebook page today. Not sure where it originated from ... Phillip Wyman or Scott Wallace or someone else. Considering that we are a Ribeiro affiliate and we have the logo and it's meaning in our lobby, I thought it appropriate that it be represented digitally on our members' site. I made a few minor edits, but the heart of the message comes through. - - - Lets just reminder ourselves what the blades of the Ribeiro Jiu Jitsu Association (RJJA) Logo that we wear on our back (at Five Rings Jiu Jitsu) actually stand for...
