| Greetings!
June and July have flown by. Lots of great stuff has been going on down at the Academy.
This is a double issue - July and August - because things have been so crazy. And, on top of that, there are tons of things coming in September - so stay tune.
We've had tournaments, trips, training, and lots of good stuff.
As always, we're focused on making sure everyone feels as a though they are "getting what they need" to challenge themselves and grow in a positive and supportive environment. As part of that mission, Coach Eric and I are always interested in people's feedback. PLEASE be sure to let us know when we are doing a good job ... and please let us know when you think we could do better. Why? Because that is what we are all about ... meeting and exceeding people's expectations. Our doors, our ears, and our hearts are always open. Please let us know how you feel.

On July 15, Coach Tom left Portland to fulfill a dream - to travel to Brazil. To train in Brazil. And to compete in Jiu Jitsu in Brazil. This journey was a dream realized! ! !

The trip had been well over two years in the making. Under the guidance of Professors Saulo Ribeiro and Rodrigo Pagani and the research of Coach Eric and Jessica, Tom worked to piece together a two week trip in and around Rio de Janeiro. It has been an absolutely amazing experience! ! !

Youth Tournament - Video Highlights

The Five Rings Jiu Jitsu Kids Competition participated in the Youth Grappling League Tournament on June 25 ... and WOW ... did they show up and represent. Twelve kids / teens compete - they brought home thirteen metals and displayed GREAT Jiu Jitsu all day long. GREAT JOB GUYS!!!! Check it out! ! !  | |

Tournament Report: Youth Grappling League Event
|
Over 90 athletes from all parts of the northwest converged on Bellevue Washington for The Youth Grappling Leagues "2011 Summer Classic" on Saturday, June 25.
Tournament host Cindy Hales obviously put her heart and soul into this event. The brackets were posted, started on time and ran quite smoothly. The Gi division ran longer than some are used to but only because Cindy let the kids compete like rockstars by holding the finals matches from each division in a boxing ring with house lights down and spotlights on. It was a rare and fun opportunity for many of these kids.

Five Rings Seminar in Redmond, WA - Miller's MMAA
|
Just got back from a GREAT weekend in Kirkland, WA, at Korbett Miller's school - Miller's Martial Arts Academy.
On Friday, June 17, I ran a seminar on "Jiu Jitsu Foundational Survival Skills" Friday with 24 athletes from MMAA. They were a GREAT group of folks - positive, eager to learn, thoughtful, and trained hard. It was a super fun experience.
