A place for you at South Church Women's Ministry

 October 2012

Greetings!

Every night after work I swing past our mailbox on the the way into the driveway....  it's always disappointing. Bills, junk mail and occasional sales fliers, but rarely any personal notes or letters.  Multiple times throughout the day I log into my email accounts. Yes, I said account-s, I have five of them I check consistently.  One is used primarily by my family and friends from the - I've had it forever.  I have one for my sewing art business, one that my church friends use and one dedicated to my volunteer work with South Women's Ministry.  In addition I am also responsible for the primary email account at the church in East Lansing that I work full time for.

Email is the way I primarily connect with people and I have to admit that it is always disappointing when I check one of my accounts and don't hear "You've got mail."  When you consider my personal Facebook page, the Women's Ministry Facebook page and Pinterest I am pretty "connected", although I am still resisting the annoying Linkedin invitations in my inbox.

So when I ran across this graphic recently it was very convicting to me. I can't begin to tell you how often I have used time constraints as an excuse to neglect time in the Word and prayer.  This week (after I finish working on this newsletter, which is an internet driven endeavor) I am committing to taking a day free of technology to see how much time it opens up for the really important stuff.  I invite you to take the challenge with me --- maybe it's something else that consumes your time --- whatever it may be let's take a break for a day to help realign our priorities.

Rejoicing,

Becky Phillips

Sister2Sister
Saturday, October 13th ~ 9:30 - 11:30 a.m.

Save money and enjoy delicious "convenience" foods all winter by learning to can your own food! Join women of all generations for the October Sister2Sister Satuday morning workshop and learn new tips and techniques for canning fresh food.

Sister2Sister meets one Saturday a month to encourage cross generational interaction between the women of South! This group was created to let women of all ages learn from the life experiences of one another. Each month's session highlights a practical topic or skill that will be demonstrated.  We invite each of you to come and meet new women, get creative ideas, and gain or help others learn practical skills in many areas of everyday life.  Some of our ladies even bring their adolescent daughters to introduce them to these skills. No matter your age, you are welcome to join us for one or all of the monthly sessions.

Register HERE for the October Sister2Sister session.

Do you have a testimony or story you would like to share with the women of South in our newsletter?  Please submit it to: southwomensmin@aol.com and we may be able to use it in an upcoming newsletter.  Please limit submissions to 400 words.

Homemade

Canning Tags

After attending Sister2Sister on October 13th and learning all about canning and preserving fresh foods you may want to go home and make these adorable canning tags!

Instructions:

1. Using a piece of chipboard, cut out the shape of a mason jar.

2. Paint two layers of chalkboard paint on your cutouts and let dry.

3. Add ribbon or ruffles to accent the 'lid' on the 'jar'.

4. Using chalk, label your tag and hang with a piece of twine.

5. Reuse the tags by gently wiping off chalk and rewriting your label.

Using Your Canned Goods

Learn to preserve your tomato's at Sister2Sister on October 13th and use this recipe to put them to use!

Start with this basic BBQ Sauce and then make it your own by adding or subtracting your favorite spices. Finding the perfect barbecue sauce just takes time! Then you have to decide whether to share your personal BBQ sauce recipe, or keep them begging!

Basic Tomato BBQ Sauce

16 oz.pureed tomato
1 can of tomato paste
2 tablespoons vinegar
2 tablespoons olive oil
2 tablespoons brown sugar
3 cloves garlic, crushed
4 tablespoons onion, minced
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon dry mustard
1 teaspoon cayenne
fresh ground pepper to taste

Cook the garlic and onion until it's soft, and then add all the rest of the ingredients. Simmer on low for 20-30 minutes. Keep stirring it often so it doesn't burn, then refrigerate for a few days before you use it. This allows the flavors to blend and mellow.
