June, 2012
Greetings!
I hope you were one of the ladies who attended our "Trash or Treasure" Ladies Night Out with Karen Ehman, on May 15th! It was a blast!
One of our gals said: "After attending and helping at numerous women's events, I can say this one was right at the top of my most favorite. Great message and speaker, great company, and God's Word was heard and glorified."
One of our challenges for the evening was to "Spring Clean" your closets and bring a donation for the Maplewood Women's shelter here in Lansing. A big THANK YOU to those who contributed. We filled a large commercial van from floor to ceiling; they said it was one of the largest donations ever. I am proud of you ladies!
And for those of you who were wondering, ALL of the shoes were successfully returned :-)
Rejoicing,
Becky Phillips

. Something Beautiful, Something Good | |
I recently took on the task of putting together some donated quilt blocks for the Mission Work Circle here at South Church.

The blocks were:
ugly,
misshapen,
poorly stitched,
frayed and wrinkled,
odd color combinations,
fabrics thick and thin, coarse and fine.
Not to be a quilting snob, but I'm used to working with nice fabrics and pleasing colors. I became very frustrated, trying to turn these homely blocks into something beautiful...and then the Bill Gaither song got into my head. "Something beautiful, something good...all my confusion He understood. All I had to offer Him was brokenness and strife, but He made something beautiful of my life." I have started to have a new attitude toward these blocks. First, I blessed the dear soul who obviously spent many, many hours stitching them and then donating them to be used in a very worthy cause.
Then the quilter began her work. The ragged edges were trimmed, and
every block (every single one!) was squared up and made true. The blocks looked better outwardly, but were still ugly! So, some pretty fabrics were added, the blocks were arranged and rearranged. Patterns and order emerged, the blocks were stitched together, and borders provided stability & cohesion. The result was a pretty little quilt!
The Lord - the 'Master Quilter' - did the same with my life! A close look will show that the insides of the blocks still contain some crooked seams, mismatched corners and puckers...remnants of the sin nature still within. They won't be fully eradicated in this lifetime. But the more and more of His beauty that's added to my life, the less obvious the flaws. The Master Artist is at work, changing me step by step into the image of his most beautiful Son - making something beautiful, something good, of my life.

"Fulfill Your Ministry"
by Beth Moore
A study of 2 Timothy 4
There is a listening guide, but no workbook for this study.
In our four sessions together we will look at these ways to fulfill the ministry/purpose that God has prepared for you:
1. Adopt a succinct (concise) life goal.
2. Acquire the appropriate tools (2 Tim. 4:13).
3. Endure the hard for the sake of the good. (2 Tim. 4:5)
4. Embrace the necessity and complexity of community.
5. Entrust yourself to the divine "so that..." (2 Tim. 4:17).
6.Always and forever, KEEP THE FAITH!!! (Heb. 11:6-7).

You can help rescue a child! South Church partners with an orphanage in Thailand to provide a safe, loving environment for children at risk.
