January, 2012
Greetings!
"For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." Jer 29:11 (NIV)
What a great reminder as we begin this New Year. It is ironic, that this verse is smack dab in the middle of a narrative describing God's judgment of captivity against Judah because He says "you did not listen to me." When the leaders heard the announcement of God's penalty, they tried to kill the messenger, Jeremiah. The message was bleak and the people did not like it. So they collected prophets and teachers to tell them pleasant things.
One of those prophets, Hananiah, was preaching short-term prosperity and "peace, peace" when there was to be no peace. But Jeremiah had a sober and true message, probably not a message they wanted to hear in the short term, but it held out a glorious future hope. Jeremiah told the people that they were to build houses, have children, carry on, etc., and not shrink back from all hope. (Jer 29:10-14)
So it is fitting that we apply this verse to our lives in 2012. Take it as a warning to always listen to God, and claim it as a beacon of hope that the story of our life is still in progress. We are exiles of Christ in this world but we have a beautiful hope and future in Christ!
