Communicating with Social Media
 by Michael Newman

I can understand why people have a hard time digging into social media marketing.  For one thing, we all have a life and most certainly more to do than we can accomplish now.

However the rules have changed in our internet-centric world and adapting to these changes is crucial to keeping ahead of the competition.  The communication channels and processes are changing too and you must be in sync with these changes.

You must make it easy for people to communicate with you and you need to get back to them in a timely manner.  AND you need to talk to them in their language, not in the voice we have all used as marketers in the past.

You must provide content that is interesting and entertaining.  People are much more receptive to your product information on social sites if you provide the added value of education and entertainment.

There is a YouTube video on how to tune a snare drum that has had over a quarter of a million views. Don't force them leave your site to find out how to use your products.

If you have a presence on the web, regardless of which one it is, visitors expect you to communicate with them using that channel.  They are thinking "hey this company has this page, why don't they get back to me when I use this page?"  If a customer posts on your Facebook wall about a service issue or someone sends you a tweet about a new product - get back to them quickly.

Even if your web site has the tools for good communication, people have come to perceive websites as billboards - one way marketing tools that speak one message.  People are more receptive and communicative on the social sites because they are there to socialize.

Create content that fuels conversation.  Discuss your point of view, provide real meaning - people aren't looking for "buzz", they are looking for meaning.  Move them emotionally, ask questions and provide content that generates discussion about things they are interested in.

Experiment and see what works.  With a little practice you should see some discussions popping up among your fans and followers.
