Loved as perhaps never before...
|
Love is rarely, if ever, defined in scripture from the perspective of the recipient--excepting, of course, of the recipients of Jesus' transforming love. And yet, when we speak of love, it's commonly described from the perspective of the one seeking to be loved. To be fully heard. To be fully known. To be fully accepted and, indeed, cherished.
When we regard "love" as an object rather than as an action--when we use the word as a noun rather than as a verb--the object of our love may become just another among our possessions. Someone, something, to be manipulated to our own advantage; and thus someone, something, authorized to manipulate our own egocentric fears.
By contrast, when we love profoundly--cherishing without clutching--without expectation of return, there is freedom. We are patient and kind; we do not envy, boast, or delight in evil; we are not proud, rude, self-seeking, or easily angered; we keep no record of wrongs; we rejoice with the truth; we always protect, always trust, always hope, always persevere; our love will not fail (1 Corinthians 13).
Our love will thus become grace--love's fullest expression. And, as grace flows through us to others, we will delight to find others coming to be refreshed. And--without intention, without manipulation--we will discover that we have become fully heard, fully known, fully accepted and, indeed, cherished.
Loved as perhaps never before.
How would you describe your level of avoidance (dismissive or obsessive?) and anxiety (fearful or secure?) around loving and being loved?
Are you preoccupied with loving or being loved?
What's your sense when you place yourself in the statement below adapted from 1 Corinthians 13? Can you make the oath with integrity? Where are the "do well" and "can do better" places?
I, _______________, am patient and kind; I do not envy, boast, or delight in evil; I am not proud, rude, self-seeking, or easily angered; I keep no record of wrongs, rejoice with the truth; I always protect, always trust, always hope, always persevere; my love will not fail."
Now, as an alternative, try this. The Apostle Paul said, "The love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us" (Romans 5:5). What's possible when the following statement becomes your oath?
The love of God within my heart is patient and kind; the love of God within my heart does not envy, boast, or delight in evil; the love of God within my heart is not proud, rude, self-seeking, or easily angered; the love of God within my heart keeps no record of wrongs, rejoices with the truth; the love of God within my heart always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres; the love of God within my heart will not fail.
What do you need? Where will you find it?
