My right arm is entering its fourth week in a sling, the result of rotator cuff surgery. Finally, at the age of fifty-two, my hopes of becoming a pitcher in the Majors have been dashed. Gratefully, I've had very little discomfort, most of it the result of Kathy's fear, slash irritation, when she sees me inadvertently reach for a pitcher of iced tea with my wounded wing.
If you ever hear me say I can do anything with one arm tied behind my back--or, more literally, with one arm tethered to my side, don't believe it. My left arm has proven weak and inept. In its defense, however, I've asked it to do some things for which it never signed up.
It's been fascinating, though, to see the strength and agility of my left arm build in just three weeks. It's a reminder of the four-step evolution of competency in any pursuit, sometimes attributed to American psychologist Abraham Maslow:
- Unconscious Incompetence (when the individual is unaware of his inability or even the importance of the task);
- Conscious Incompetence (when the individual comprehends both the importance of the task and her talent deficit);
- Conscious Competence (when the individual comprehends the task and the process required for its completion, but he must carefully think through each step in its execution);
- Unconscious Competence (when the individual has had sufficient experience in the task until it has become "second nature," and she can perform it easily, perhaps even while simultaneously performing another task, and she may be able to teach others).
So, my left-hand index finger wonders...
Where have you, in hindsight, negotiated the four-step evolution of competency? What's the learning?
Is there a place today where you are "stuck" in either Conscious Incompetence or Conscious Competence? What do you need to get "unstuck"? Where will you find it?
