Among the apostles, I have a favorite.
(In fact, don't tell the other apostles, but my favorite may well have been the Lord's favorite as well.)
It's John.
It's intriguing...
The apostle John, arguably the most faithful of the twelve, virtually disappears from the historical record following mere cameos in the opening chapters of the book of Acts. Only to reappear with his written contributions to the New Testament near the close of the first century.
Where'd he go?
The answer, like so many answers, can be found at the foot of the cross. Among the last thoughts of Jesus--thoughts expressed in his final words; words at a premium owing to the pain with which each was extracted--were those conveyed to his mother Mary and John. To Mary, of John, "Woman, behold, your son"; and, to John, of Mary, "Behold your mother." "From that hour," John testified of himself, "the disciple took her into his own household" (John 19:26-27).
Jesus appears to have withdrawn the man who was arguably his most faithful apostle from the "front pages"--and, indeed, the "front lines"--to take care of mom until her passing. Be careful not to limit your perspective of what constitutes "kingdom work."
During this time of relative quiet and isolation, in contrast to the Apostle Paul's raw and rational testimony of the gospel, John developed a perspective that seems almost, dare we call it, mystical--a word I use in the sense of "wonder," using broad, conceptual strokes to paint a picture of the gospel as life, light, and love.
What gave John this perspective, unique among the apostles and authors of the New Testament? Was it merely his unique personality and gifts? Was it the mature wisdom of the one apostle who died a natural death as an aged man? Or was it, perhaps, a life that valued quiet and isolation--a devotion that invited the word of God to move from head to heart, from word to wisdom to wonder?
Among all of scripture, how do the writings of John--the gospel and three epistles that bear his name along with the Revelation--resonate with you? Why or why not?
What practices can you adopt that will allow scripture to move from word to wisdom to wonder within you? Stay tuned...
