Did I tell you about the gorilla who wanted to kill me?
|
Don't interfere with the agenda of a primate.
When I was a young man, living in the Southern California suburb of Burbank, I routinely purchased an annual pass to the Los Angeles Zoo. Among other benefits, cardholders were allowed to enter the zoo well before the park opened to the general public. I often took a book and spent an hour before work quietly reading and observing the morning activities of the zoo.
One morning I found a bench and sat down in front of the gorilla habitat. It was vacant and quiet; however, there was a disturbing commotion emanating from behind the facade of the habitat. The sound of a wooden spoon banging an aluminum pot, answered initially by the grumbling and--moments later--the roaring of a perturbed gorilla.
Suddenly, the massive primate appeared at the entrance to his cave. He had bad bed head. It was apparent he'd been prematurely awakened from a deep slumber. He was in a murderous rage. No kidding. I watched as he surveyed the landscape of his domain. His eyes fell upon the only person in sight upon whom he might vent his anger.
That would be me.
The gorilla raced in my direction. Only the moat separated us from one another. He stared into my eyes, pounded his chest, flared his massive nostrils, and slowly, deliberately, snorted several times--sounding so much like a locomotive leaving the station.
Without breaking his gaze, the gorilla squatted to the ground, blindly felt around for a fallen branch, and raised himself upon his haunches; with both hands he thrust the branch forward in my direction. And broke it in two.
Message received.
Don't interfere with a primate's agenda.
What's your understanding around the root of anger and impatience?
How might releasing your grip on your personal agenda soothe your inner gorilla?
