Culture shocks...
Kathy and I happily live in Farmerville, a small town in lovely, northeastern Louisiana. Actually, we live eight miles out from Farmerville, near a country crossroads. "Oh," a local facetiously said, "You live in a suburb of Farmerville."

One winter morning, within days of our move from California, we needed a few things for breakfast. Our Toyota had a flat tire, so I folded myself behind the wheel of Kathy's Volkswagen Beetle--me looking much like the renown VW logo itself--and drove the short distance to the general store "slash" barber shop at the crossroads.

I pulled myself from Kathy's Bug and slowly stretched my large frame to its fullest height. I looked around at the numerous camo-wrapped, "lift-me-up-where-I-long-to-be," 4x4 pick-up trucks in the market's unpaved parking lot. There in the midst of them was our timid Beetle--no, Kathy's Beetle (I drive a truck; well, okay, it's a 4Runner, but technically it's a truck)--looking much like a dwarf among giants. And not just a Beetle. A Beetle with a California license plate. A Beetle with a California personalized license plate reading, "OH DARLIN." A Beetle with a California license plate reading, "OH DARLIN," and emblazoned with a Mary Kay Cosmetics decal.

I resisted the impulse to hike up my jeans, utter a profanity, and spit as a measure of the depths of my testosterone. When I walked into the small general store, the pack of men dressed in muscle shirts and John Deere caps drinking their morning coffee grew quiet. In the most formidable voice I could muster, I inquired, "Where's the butter?"

Which led me to think about my relationship to culture, the social mores of the communities--local and global--in which we live and work, play and pray.

Why are we so vulnerable to the influence and judgments of our cultural environment?

How might the prevailing culture, in some cases, have a positive influence on our lives?

How might the prevailing culture, in other cases, often intimidate our individuality and threaten our integrity?

What would it look like to break free of an unhealthy reliance upon the influence and judgments of our cultural environment?

How important is your subscription to People magazine? Just kidding. Well, kind of.

So, what's the learning? As quarterback Joe Montana used to say to wide receiver Jerry Rice, "Go deep."
