There's power in a name...
Written upon the opening leaves of scripture is a captivating story of Adam and the animals of Eden. God brought every beast of the field and every bird of the sky before Adam to see what the man would name them. "And whatever the man called a living creature, that was its name" (Genesis 2:19; 1:28).

I'm curious if the names Adam gave to the animals were broad, genus names or specific, personal names. No matter, I suppose.

There was, however, more to Adam's naming of the animals than meets the "I." First, when Adam named an animal, he acknowledged it's presence and developed familiarity with it. Second, when Adam named an animal, he assumed ownership and accepted responsibility for it. Third, when Adam named an animal, he brought the animal into a place of subjection to him.

And the point is, Michael?

You and I, like Adam, have our own menageries to manage: menageries of wounds, addictions, and fears. Or, as one celebrated recovery program describes them: hurts, habits, and hang-ups. More often than not, we're content to allow these beasts to remain unidentified, unchallenged, unrestrained.

What would it look like to take our cue from Adam and name the beasts of our garden? First, by naming our wounds, addictions, and fears, we acknowledge their presence and become familiar with them. Second, by naming our wounds, addictions, and fears, we assume ownership and accept responsibility for them. Third, by naming our wounds, addictions, and fears, we bring them into a place of subjection to us.

Just by naming them.

There's power in a name.

What's the name of the elephant in the room with you? (Or is it a herd?) Name it and write it down. When we write, we clarify and crystalise our thoughts.

How's it worked out for you and those who love you to deny the elephant's there?

What's possible for you?
