Once upon a time there was a fox...
|
So begins, in my imagination, my "story."
You may not be aware of it, but like me you've been crafting your own story from childhood.
So...what's your story?
Not the facts, mind you; just the story.
Confused? Allow me to explain...
From the time we move from childhood, through puberty, and ultimately--as Dennis the Menace once said--into "adultery," our lives tend to travel in unanticipated directions. As we look back at various stages along the way, we're sometimes pleasantly surprised; often, however, we look back with a measure of disappointment and disillusionment--more so as we grow older and our journey moves us farther and farther away from our expectations. To paraphrase the late great Theodor Geisel, aka "Dr. Seuss," "Oh, the Places We'd Like to Have Gone!"
And so we create a story, a story replete with heroes and villains, a story that explains how we got from there to here--and not over there. If the outcome thus far is favorable, we're likely to be equally fond of the narrative we've crafted to support it. If, however, our expectations have been dashed, we'll likely show up in our own story as a victim. We cast our family, friends, and associates in supporting roles--often assigning them and our shared context responsibility for our disappointment and disillusionment. Our story is often so convincing that it becomes our reality. And...here's where it can get a bit dicey...once we've crafted the story and are satisfied with its fidelity, we surrender authorship; we give the story itself the power to shape our life, our relationships, our outcome.
Fortunately, we can edit our story and reframe our role at any time. It takes courage, however, to relinquish the narrative of a victim and to assume the voice of authenticity and responsibility.
So, what's your story?
What did your earliest vision for your life look like? How has that vision evolved as you matured?
How has your life either merged with or diverged from that vision?
To whom or to what do you assign responsibility if your vision has been surrendered to disappointment and disillusionment? (This then is your story.)
Do you see yourself as a grateful participant or as a victim in your own story?
How does your story influence your relationship with those closest to you?
When we are able to "name" our story, we are able to change our story. What would it take, if necessary, to reframe your perspective and to thus edit your story?
Better yet, what would it take to lose the story completely and to simply pay attention to, to experience, life--free from the constraints of story? How does our story, often to our own detriment, become our reality?
How do you show up for others as they craft their stories? What would it take for you to become their Muse, rather than their critic?
