I know up, down, left, right.
North, south, east, west. Not so much.
It can be difficult for me, even when driving on a straight road, to determine which direction I'm heading.
Just after my sixteenth birthday, I traveled by plane from Los Angeles to Northern California. Friends in the town of Lodi had graciously loaned their car to this novice driver for the entire weekend. On Friday I drove to a church event about forty miles to the south. Following a lovely evening I asked for directions back to the freeway, Highway 99 North, to return to my friends' home. "You'll have no trouble finding the freeway," I was assured, "Just follow the road in front of the house and it will ultimately curve and sweep you on to Highway 99."
Indeed it did.
As I drove...and drove...and drove...I felt a doubt arise within my gut. Surely, I should be getting close by now. The hour grew late; the freeway became desolate; talk radio turned to interviews of those who'd experienced alien abduction. A short time later, I saw a billboard for the Fresno County Fair. Curious, I thought, advertising the Fresno County Fair on a freeway leading away from Fresno...
Unless...
What if my gut was correct, and I was, in fact, traveling south instead of north? In those days there was very little open on the road at that hour. I finally found an old truck stop, however, in a town that today no longer exists.
I nervously climbed out of the car and approached two grizzled truck drivers descending the steps from the diner. "Can you tell me how far I am from Lodi?" Neither man was familiar with Northern California; consequently, they looked at one another and began countering each other with guesstimates--scary guesstimates, while I anxiously awaited the consensus: "Probably 'bout a hundred miles."
With nary a phone in sight, I jumped back into the car and headed north--yes, I confirmed, north--on Highway 99. I held the accelerator to the floor while night passed into morning and talk radio forums moved from alien abduction to Sasquatch.
It was nearly 3:00 AM before I pulled into my friends' drive back in Lodi. Adding to my anxiety, upon arrival the house was fully lit, but empty. But that's another story...
My not-so-helpful father-in-law used to respond to every request for directions with the same answer: "You can't get there from here." Well, in spite of his apparent pessimism, do you know where you're going and what it'll take to get there?
Wait a minute, are we talking about Lodi or life itself?
Is there a way in which--in life and with a nod to Creedence Clearwater Revival--you're "stuck in Lodi again"?
Not incidentally, do you know the difference between "magnetic north" and "true north"...
If, on a whim, you were to trek toward the North Pole and rely upon a compass dial for direction, you'd likely miss your destination by several hundred miles. A compass needle--owing in part to deposits of iron ore or magnetite in the Earth's crust--points to "magnetic north," as opposed to "true north." True north then is the direction in which the North Pole is located along the Earth's rotational axis, the place where the map's longitudinal lines converge. So...if magnetic north and true north are metaphors of our life's path, what might they represent to you?
Are you following your magnetic north or your true north? How would you know?
What's the learning?
